#5 Lakers Dominate Michigan Tech 6-1 Sunday

ALLENDALE – The No. 5 Grand Valley State women's soccer team dominated Michigan Tech by a score of 6-1 Sunday (Oct. 26) afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers improve to 12-2 on the season and 9-1 in the GLIAC.

GVSU dominated the first half scoring four goals on 22 shots with nine on frame, while holding Michigan Tech to zero first half shots. Sonya Mehta scored the opening goal in the 12th minute. Michigan Tech attempted a clear in the middle of the box that deflected off Alli French and went right to Mehta who got past the goalkeeper and kicked it into the wide-open net. That goal was Mehta's fourth of the season.

The Lakers would find the back of the net again to make it 2-0 in the 27th minute. GVSU sent a ball into the box off a corner kick. The ball bounced around and found Mehta whose shot was stopped by the keeper, but Kacy Lauer was there to head in the rebound for her fourth of the season. GVSU would make it 3-0 11 minutes later off the foot of Ivy Wilhelm. Shea Douglass made a good pass to Wilhelm who fired it up and over the keeper from just outside the box for her fifth goal of the season. Acadia Murphy would make it 4-0 just before the end of the half off a penalty kick goal for her first career goal as a Laker.

In the second half, Alli French notched her fifth goal of the season more minutes into the half. Mehta got a good shot that was stopped by the keeper, but French was in a good position to kick home the rebound. Michigan Tech would score their lone goal in the 50th minute off a long shot into the bock right corner. Mehta would add to her career day with her second goal of the day and fifth of the season in the 54th minute.

GVSU outshot Michigan Tech 39-4 and 18-2 on target. The Lakers produced nine corner kicks and did not allow a corner kick to the Huskies. With the win, GVSU increases their lead in the GLIAC standings. The Lakers sit in first place with a five-point lead from second place Saginaw Valley State with four games to play.

GVSU will be home next weekend when they host Davenport on Friday, October 31st at 5:00pm and Purdue Northwest on Sunday, November 2nd at 1:00pm. Both games will be streamed live on FloCollege.
