BIG RAPIDS, MICH. – It was a battle of the last undefeated teams in the GLIAC, as the GVSU women's basketball team traveled up 131 to face off against Ferris State. After a tight first quarter, the Lakers used a big third quarter to pull away for an 83-61 win. GVSU is now 15-1 overall and atop the GLIAC standings at 5-0.
The Lakers jumped out to a 7-2 lead, before FSU battled back to tie it up at seven. The game remained tied at 11, but then the Lakers went on a 10-2 run to end the quarter, getting two three-pointers from
Hadley Miller in the run, to lead 21-13 after the opening frame
After the Bulldogs cut their deficit to six,
Lexi Plitzuweit converted an old-fashioned three-point play to put GVSU back up by nine. A
Nicole Kamin layup brought the lead to double-digits at 29-18. The lead stayed in double-figures heading into the half, with the Lakers up 36-24.
Abrie Cabana opened up the second half with a Laker triple to bring the lead to 15. After a couple of Bulldog buckets, the Lakers went on a 9-0 run, getting five straight from
Kathryn Schmidt, bracketed by two
Rylie Bisballe layups, to bring the lead up to 48-28. The lead grew to as high as 26 points, following a Cabana layup, but Ferris State hit a couple of late buckets, making it 61-40 heading to the fourth.
The lead got back up to 25 following a 5-0 run from
Paige Vanstee and a Bisballe layup, making it 70-45. It only dipped below 20 points for a few seconds, but GVSU answered back to bring it above 20 to close out the matchup.
Rylie Bisballe was the lone Laker in double-figures, scoring 15 points, shooting 7-10 from the floor.
Hadley Miller,
Abrie Cabana, and
Paige Vanstee all scored nine points.
MacKenzie Bisballe and
Nicole Kamin also scored nine each, with Bisballe grabbing six boards and Kamin had a team-high eight. The Lakers scored 42 points in the paint and forced 26 Bulldog turnovers.
