ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's basketball team became the Sawyers for the seventh annual fauxback game Saturday afternoon. Just like the previous six games, GVSU was dominant, destroying Purdue Northwest for a 106-47 victory. That was the 20
th win of the season for the Sawyers, and the 10
th of GLIAC play.
The Pride led 7-6 just over four minutes into the game, but the Laker offense started to find its groove after that.
MacKenzie Bisballe hit a three to start a 15-2 run that ended the quarter, closed out by a
Paige Vanstee and-1 layup and free throw, that saw the Sawyers leading 21-9 after the opening 10 minutes.
Bisballe and Vanstee combined to score the first seven points of the second quarter, extending the GVSU lead out to 28-9. After PNW cut it 15 at 30-15, the Sawyers rattled off a 12-0 run, highlighted by another Vanstee and-1 and a triple from
Hadley Miller, that pushed their advantage to 42-15. The lead quickly grew above 30 points, as
Ellie Droste and
Kathryn Schmidt each connected from deep in the final 80 seconds of the half, making it 56-19 at the break.
The two teams traded baskets for the first half of the third quarter, with GVSU leading 71-32. From there on, it was another Sawyer run, this one 12-4, making it 83-36 after three quarters.
GVSU extended their lead up to 50 points on a Bisballe jumper, putting the Sawyers up 86-36. A three from
Molly Anderson put the Sawyers over 100 for the fourth time this season, then
Avery Zeinstra and
Sydney Cherney closed it out with two more triples, giving GVSU their second highest scoring game of the season.
MacKenzie Bisballe led the offense with 18 points, shooting 7-9 from the floor, adding four boards and three blocks. Her older sister
Rylie Bisballe recorded her second double-double of the season, tallying 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Kathryn Schmidt totaled 13 points, five assits, and four rebounds, with
Avery Zeinstra posting 12 points, five steals, and five rebounds.
Paige Vanstee added 12 points and eight boards, while
Ellie Droste notched 10 points. As a team, GVSU tallied 58 points in the paint and dished out 28 assists.
The Sawyers forced 27 Pride turnovers, getting 33 points off those turnovers. They won the rebounding battle 50-29 and only turned it over nine times.
