Sawyers Dominate PNW 83-64 Saturday

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team dominated Purdue Northwest 83-64 for their fourth consecutive win Saturday (Jan. 25) afternoon on Sawyer's Day. GVSU improves to 10-8 on the season and 6-4 in the GLIAC.
 
Trevor Smith Jr. led GVSU with a new career high 18 points on 8-10 shooting and two three-pointers. Smith Jr. dished out five assists, hauled down four rebounds and blocked two shots. Cam Regenrus scored a career high 10 points and blocked a career high four shots and brought down eight rebounds. Marcus Gray II notched a career high 14 points with three made triples. William Dunn scored in double figures for the fifth straight game with 12 points on a perfect 3-3 shooting from behind the arc. 
 
GVSU shot 47% from the field, 36% from three, and a season best 90% from the free throw line shooting 10-11. Purdue Northwest shot 33% from the field and 31% from three. GVSU outrebounded Purdue Northwest 44-36 while the Pride had 15 offensive rebounds to the Sawyers 14. GVSU outscored PNW 36-20 in the paint and 41-17 in bench points.
 
Purdue Northwest began the game on 13-4 run knocking down three shots from three-point range in the first four minutes. GVSU responded by going on a 27-8 run in 10 minutes to take a double-digit lead. Gray II knocked down his second three of half to push the lead to 13 points with just under four minutes remaining in the opening 20 minutes.
 
The Pride would cut the lead back to single digits with over a minute left. Smith Jr. answered for GVSU with a 5-0 run to increase the lead to 14 at the break. Smith Jr. hit a driving layup followed by a deep three-pointer from the logo at the buzzer.
 
GVSU would take the momentum into the start of the second half by going on a 19-4 run in the first five minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 63-49 off a three-pointer by Gray II. Purdue Northwest would knock down six three-pointers in the second half, but GVSU would have the answer with five three-pointers to keep the lead above 20 points for most of the half. 
 
GVSU will be back on the road next weekend when they travel to the Upper Peninsula to face Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech. GVSU will take on Northern Michigan on Thursday (Jan. 30) at 7:30 PM in Marquette. GVSU will close the weekend against Michigan Tech on Saturday (Feb. 1) at 2:00 PM in Houghton. Both games will be streamed live on FloSports and can be listened live on Thunder Country 107.3.
