Lakers Take Down Parkside 59-49 on 616 Night

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team extended their win streak to three games after defeating Parkside 59-49 Thursday (Jan. 23) night on 616 Night. The Lakers improve to 9-8 on the season and 5-4 in the GLIAC.
 
GVSU was led by Trevor Smith Jr. who scored a season high 14 points on 6-10 shooting and tied a career high four steals. Jalen Charity scored 12 points and hauled down eight rebounds while shooting 7-8 from the free throw line. William Dunn added 11 points and five rebounds. Shamus Thompson led GVSU with nine rebounds. 
 
The Lakers shot 40.8% from the field while Parkside shot 33% from the field. GVSU held Parkside under 50 points which was the first time GVSU held an opponent under 50 points since the 2021-22 season when they held Judson to 46 points. The Lakers outrebounded the Rangers 36-35.
 
In the first half, both teams exchanged leads in the first eight minutes of the game. GVSU would take a five-point lead off a step back mid-range jump shot by Smith Jr. with 9:30 minutes to play. Parkside would take a three-point lead with seven minutes left in the half, but GVSU quickly answered with a 5-0 run to retake the lead at 18-16 with 4:30 to play. The Lakers would increase the lead back to five but Parkside would knock down a half-court shot at the buzzer to pull within two at the break. 
 
GVSU began the second half on a 14-2 run in the first five minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 38-24. Dunn began the half with a mid-range jumper followed by a three-pointer by Charity and steal and score by Smith Jr. The Lakers continued their second half dominance going on a 24-6 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half to push the lead to 20 at 46-26 off back-to-back three-pointers by Kaden Brown
 
Parkside answered by going on a 21-6 run in eight minutes to cut the Laker deficit to five at 54-49 with just under two minutes to play. GVSU stopped the Parkside run and closed the game on a 5-0 run off a layup by Charity and free throws by Smith Jr. and Charity to claim the 59-49 win.
 
GVSU will close out the weekend on Saturday, January 25th when they host Purdue Northwest for Sawyers Day. Tipoff is set for 3:00 PM at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The game will be streamed live on FloSports and can be listened live on Thunder country 107.3.
