CHICAGO – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team defeated Roosevelt on the road 76-70 Monday (Jan. 20) night in Chicago, Illinois. The Lakers improve to 8-8 on the season and 4-4 in the GLIAC.
Kaden Brown led all scorers with 30 points on 9-12 shooting with six three-pointers and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.
William Dunn notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds shooting a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.
Jalen Charity scored 12 points on 3-4 shooting and 6-8 shooting from the free throw line.
Trevor Smith Jr. dished out a career high eight assists and added seven points and two rebounds.
GVSU shot 40% from the field and 40% from behind the arc. Roosevelt shot 45% from the field and 29% from downtown. Roosevelt outrebounded GVSU 35-32 and 8-7 in offensive rebounds. GVSU dished out 17 assists and scored 22 points in the paint.
GVSU started the game on a 10-2 run shooting 3-5 from three-point range in the first four minutes of the game.
Kaden Brown knocked down his second of four first half three-pointers just five minutes into the game to increase the lead to 13-6. Roosevelt answered with a 15-4 run to take their first lead of the game with 9:40 to play in the opening half.
Brown would give the Lakers the lead again at 27-26 with a three-pointer, but Roosevelt quickly answered with back-to-back shots from behind the arc to take a 32-27 lead with just under five minutes left in the first.
Brown would add another three and a driving layup for 16 first half points to give GVSU a 34-33 lead. After Roosevelt knocked down a floater in the paint to regain the lead,
Trevor Smith Jr. answered with a floater in the paint to send GVSU with a 36-35 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Roosevelt took an early 38-37 lead but Brown quickly answered with five straight points to put GVSU back in the lead at 42-38. GVSU would take their largest lead of the game at 63-51 off a pair of free throws by and a made layup by Chairty with seven minutes to play.
Roosevelt would go on 14-2 run to tie the game at 65-65 with 3:26 remaining in the game. Dunn would knock down a huge three-pointer with under two minutes to play to give the Lakers a 68-65 lead. After GVSU got a defensive stop, Smith Jr. knocked down a floater in the paint to make it a two-possession game with one minute remaining. GVSU would knock down their final 10 free throws to ice the game and pull away with a six-point win.
GVSU will return home this week for 616 night against Parkside on Thursday (Jan. 23) at 8:00 PM. The Lakers will then host Purdue Northwest for Sawyers Day on Saturday (Jan. 25) at 3:00 PM. Both games will be streamed live on FloSports and can be listened live on Thunder Country 107.3.
