ALLENDALE, MICH. – In the first game of 2025 the GVSU women's basketball team shot the lights out, literally. Right at the beginning of halftime, a campus-wide power outage delayed the game by 90 minutes, but once play restarted, the Lakers dominated once again, winning 93-52.
The Lakers jumped out to a 13-2 lead, getting triples from
Kathryn Schmidt,
Lexi Plitzuweit, and
Ellie Droste. Another three from
Abrie Cabana put the Lakers up 18-4, then
Hadley Miller had two late layups, including one to beat the buzzer, making it 22-7 after one.
The offense continued to thrive in the second quarter, with GVSU starting on a 12-0 run, pushing their lead up to 34-7. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter, as the Lakers led 44-19 at the break.
A long power outage did not disrupt the Laker offense, starting the second half on a 12-3 run. During the run,
Rylie Bisballe hit a three-pointer that moved her into 10
th place all-time in program history with 1,307 points. Grand Valley increased their lead up to 37 points to finish off the quarter, leading 73-36.
Lauren Slagle hit an early layup through contact, drawing the foul, and hitting the free throw to give GVSU a 40-point lead, up 78-38. The lead stayed around 40 points the rest of the way, then a late layup from
MacKenzie Bisballe ensured the advantage stayed above 40, the Lakers sixth such win of the year.
Rylie Bisballe led all scorers with 15 points, while
Lauren Slagle had a career-high 13 points, and
Abrie Cabana added 12.
MacKenzie Bisballe scored eight points, adding four boards and two blocks, with
Sydney Cherney grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
Nicole Kamin recorded five points, five rebounds, and four steals. The Lakers won the rebounding battle 49-36 and only turned the ball over six times. All 14 Lakers who dressed recorded a basket.
