CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team closed the game on a 9-0 run in the final two minutes to claim a 62-60 win at Davenport Thursday (Jan. 16) night. The Lakers improve to 7-8 on the season and 3-4 in the GLIAC.
Kaden Brown led the Lakers with 21 points with four made three-pointers, while shooting 7-10 from the free throw line.
William Dunn notched 15 points and seven rebounds on 6-12 shooting and two blocks.
Trevon Gunter and
Shamus Thompson each scored six points and swiped two steals.
Trevor Smith Jr. added five points and a game high six assists.
GVSU shot 36% from the field and 38% from three, while Davenport shot 37% from the field and 25% from three. The Panthers outrebounded the Lakers 42-34 and 12-8 in offensive rebounds.
GVSU started the making their first five shots from three-point range in the first seven minutes of the game to take a 25-10 lead.
Kaden Brown scored eight points off the bench including two three-pointers during that span.
Davenport would answer with an 8-2 run to cut the Laker lead to 27-18 with just under nine minutes in the first half. GVSU would push the lead back to double digits off a
William Dunn layup with under six minutes to play.
The Panthers would respond by going on a 12-4 run in a three-minute span to cut the Laker lead to 31-30. GVSU would close the half on a 5-0 run that ended with a
Trevor Smith Jr. layup at the buzzer to send the Lakers up 36-30 at the half.
In the second half, Davenport cut their deficit to three at 40-37 but Brown quickly answered with his third made triple to push the lead back to six. The Panthers would tie the game at 46-46 with 12 minutes to play after going on a 9-3 run. Davenport would get their first lead since it was 2-0 at 47-46 with 11:30 remaining.
The final 10 minutes of the game was a defensive battle between the two teams. Davenport would take their largest lead of the game at 60-53 with 3:24 to play. The Lakers responded with an 8-0 run to claim a 61-60 lead with 1:18 to play. Brown knocked down a big three to pull GVSU within three followed by four free throws made by Brown and
Shamus Thompson.
The Lakers would come up big with two stops followed by a
Trevor Smith Jr. free throw to push the lead to 62-60. GVSU would get one more stop as Davenport was forced to a tough three that was off the mark as the Lakers would claim the two-point win, closing the game on a 9-0 run.
GVSU will travel to Roosevelt on Monday (Jan. 20) night in a battle of the Lakers for the first time between the two programs. Tipoff is set for 7:30 PM CT / 8:30 PM ET in Chicago, Illinois. The game will be streamed live on FloSports and can be listened live on Thunder Country 107.3.
