The 8th-ranked Grand Valley State men's wrestling team finished sixth at the 2024 NWCA National Dual Championships held in Cedar Falls, Iowa on the campus of Northern Iowa. The Lakers went 3-2 against five top 20 teams and were the only unseeded team in the tournament to finish in the top eight. Grand Valley State picked up a 20-17 win over Mary in the consolation semifinal dual that came down the 285 match that went into overtime. Parkside claimed a 43-3 victory over GVSU in the fifth-place match. GVSU will hit the road again for the Gannon Duals Saturday (Jan. 18) in Erie, Pa.  


GVSU needed a win versus Mary in the consolation semifinals to finish in the top six. Mary jumped out with three consecutive wins before junior Chris Donathan picked up a fall at 149 to get the Lakers on the board. Mary won two more matches to build its lead to 17-6, however, that is where the Lakers took over. Junior Josh Kenny tallied a major decision (8-0) at 174 and RS freshman Brayden Mirjavadi recorded a fall over #17 Donte Roggio at the 6:29 mark of the match. The turning point was at 197 when junior Wyatt Miller defeated #13 Matt Kaylor by a 6-1 decision to tie the match at 17-17. Junior Carter Blough then gutted out a 2-1 overtime sudden victory when he was awarded a stalling point in overtime. Blough pushed the pace the entire match to pick up the win.
