INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The GVSU women's volleyball team closed out their opening weekend with two more victories to move to 4-0 on the young season. The Lakers took down Kentucky Wesleyan to start the day, then finished it off with a victory over Maryville
In the opening game, GVSU dispatched KWC in straight sets, dominating the Panthers to the tune of 25-15, 25-19, and 25-10 set wins. It was a balanced offensive attack, with nobody having more than nine kills. With those nine kills was
Paige Sanders, who did it on a .533 hitting percentage and 2.5 blocks.
Grace Busold had eight kills, while
Kennedy Arp added six kills and 2.5 blocks.
Meghan O'Sullivan had 13 assists to go along with three total blocks. As a team, the Lakers had 10 total blocks and five service aces, holding the Panthers to a .024 team hitting percentage.
The final match of the weekend saw the Lakers take down Maryville in four sets, winning 25-16, 25-18, 23-25, and 25-18.
Jordyn Gates led the way with 16 kills, 25 assists, seven digs, and two service aces.
Brianna Stawski had 10 kills and 3.5 total blocks, with
Kendall Stover adding eight kills, 15 digs, and three total blocks. O'Sullivan had 15 assists and
Julia Blaney added 28 digs. Maryville hit just .020 as a team, and the Lakers had 15 total blocks.
The Lakers are back home next week to host their own tournament. The 2024 Hampton Inn and Suites Grand Rapids Downtown Classic takes place from September 12
th through the 14
th. Over that time, GVSU will play Northwood, Tiffin, Missouri Western State, and Bemidji State.
