ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's volleyball team played a doubleheader today at the Hampton Inn and Suites Downtown Classic, and as they had in the first five games of the year, they came away with wins. They defeated Tiffin in four sets, then Missouri Western State in a sweep. Grand Valley is now 7-0 to begin the season, with just one more game before GLIAC play starts.
In game one, the Lakers took down Tiffin in four sets by the scores of 25-18, 25-14, 19-25, 25-23.
Jordyn Gates led the way with a 12-kill, 23-assist, 13-dig triple-double.
Meghan O'Sullivan added 11 kills, 11 digs, and nine assists, with
Kendall Stover recording 10 kills and nine digs.
Julia Blaney tallied 19 digs, including the 1,000
th dig of her career, becoming just the 13
th player in program history to hit that mark.
The second game of the day saw the Lakers play Missouri Western. GVSU got the job done in straight sets, winning 25-23, 25-18, and 25-21. Brianna Staswski and
Paige Sanders each had eight kills, to go along with a combined five blocks. Gates dished out 20 assists, adding seven kills, nine digs, and 4.5 blocks. O'Sullivan had 15 assists and Stover totaled 11 digs.
The Lakers finish out the tournament tomorrow afternoon with a 4:00 match against Bemidji State.
