The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced today that Grand Valley State captured the 2023-24 Learfield Directors' Cup title with 983.00 points in the maximum number of 15 sports. The Lakers' 16 Directors' Cup crowns is a Division II record and GVSU has also finished among the top two in the final standings each of the last 21 years the trophy has been presented. The Lakers have won 16-of-the-last-19 titles overall. Indianapolis finished second with 901.25 points, followed by West Texas A&M (900.25), Wingate (870.00) and Tampa (760.50). Among fellow GLIAC members, Ferris State finished 34th (411.00), Wayne State finished 44th (380.00) and Saginaw Valley State finished 45th (378.50).
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup trophy, which is commonly known as the all-sports trophy, is presented to the top athletic department in the country each year. The scoring system is based on the top 15 national finishes of men's and women's sports, but must include men's and women's basketball, baseball and volleyball in the final point totals.
Grand Valley State scored 365.00 points in the fall, followed by 307.50 points in the winter and 310.50 in the spring. GVSU scored points in 20 sports, dropping the points scored (270.0) by women's swimming & diving (58.5), men's wrestling (61.5), softball (50), men's tennis (50), women's tennis (25) and women's lacrosse (25). The Lakers won the 2023 women's cross country National Championship and recorded seven top five finishes and 10 top 10 finishes nationally.

"This is a direct reflection of the type of individuals we attract to Grand Valley State and how they compete throughout each of our sports and when I think about four consecutive and 16 overall I am humbled by the work and effort that goes into this accomplishment. In addition, our student-athletes achieved at a high level in the classroom and represented Grand Valley State in our communities," added Becker.
Grand Valley State also claimed the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) 2023-24 Presidents' Trophy for the 25th consecutive year and a GLIAC-best 30th time overall. The Presidents' Trophy, commonly referred to as the All-Sports Trophy, is awarded at the end of each year of competition to the conference member having demonstrated general excellence in all sports. The Presidents' Trophy is designed to promote well-rounded athletic programs within each member institution.
