Lakers Lead Heading Into Final Day of the GLIAC Championships

Eli Kosiba breaks two records in the men's high jump on day two

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field teams led the way for both squads as they head into the final day of the GLIAC Championships tomorrow (May 3rd). The men's crew sits in first place currently with a team score of 130 points, ahead of Davenport (37pts) and Purdue Northwest (36.50pts). The women's team recorded a team score of 46 points after day two, sitting in first place ahead of Saginaw Valley (30pts) and Davenport (29 pts).

Day Two Final Results

The Grand Valley high jump trio put on a show in Allendale at day two of the GLIAC Championships, with all three athletes having a perfect record up until 2.28m. Eli Kosiba not only crowned himself as the 2024 GLIAC Champion, but also broke the Grand Valley State school and GLIAC Meet record, clearing a height of 2.28m. Kosiba now ranks first in All-Collegiate. Jonathan Rankins-James and Jaivon Harrison tied for second place to complete the swept for the Lakers, both clearing a height of 2.22m.  

The men's hammer throw crew finished with three athletes in the Top 5. Matt Thomas led the Lakers as he claimed the title in the hammer throw with a distance of 61.97m. Shane Byrne finished in second place with a throw of 60.00m and Ty Anthony in fifth recording a new personal-best of 50.67m. 

On the women's side, the Lakers got it done as they swept the Top 3 led by Shelby Ulven. Ulven recorded a distance of 60.21m followed by Alaina Omonode with a throw of 59.79m and Natalia Pluff a distance of 49.95m.

In the men's long jump, Chrisly Kelly-Cannon and Luke Jelderks finished back-to-back claiming first and second place for Grand Valley. Freshman, Kelly-Cannon earned first place with a jump of 7.39m, while Jelderks finished in second with a distance of 7.27m. 

Dolan Gonzales and Colton Emeott tied for second place in the men's pole vault, both clearing a height of 4.95m. Additionally, Wyatt Alwine finished in fourth place with a height of 4.95m. 

On the track, Kayce Rypma brought home the title in the women's steeplechase recording a time of 10:36.18. For the men, Caleb Futter finished in first place with a time of 9:01.60 followed by Drennan Akins in third place in a time of 9:27.99.

The GLIAC Championships will begin at 9:40 a.m. tomorrow (May 3rd) with the women's 10,000m followed by the men's 10k and the field events at 10:00 a.m.

In the men's shot put, Myles Kerner will be representing Grand Valley State as he currently ranks first in Division II. On the women's side, Erika Beistle, Mackenzie Bohrer, Reette Thorns, Margaret Stevenson and Paige Westra will take on the shot put.

Additionally, Beistle, Stevenson and Westra will compete in the women's discus. While Ty Anthony, Nathan Spitzley and James MacKey Jr. compete for the men. 

On the track, the following athletes competed in the prelims on day two and received a qualifying time for the final running events set for tomorrow.
