ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State track and field kicked off the 2024 Outdoor GLIAC Conference Championships this afternoon on their home turf in Allendale with the start of the men's and women's multi-events.
Mason Floria and
Ian Trall are competing for the Lakers in the men's decathlon and currently sit in second (Floria) and fourth (Trall). Floria recorded a total of 3405 points, as he finished in the Top 3 within four events, earning first place in the 100m and 400m dash. Trall in fourth, recorded a total of 2910 points on day one.
Kennedy Gardner sits in seventh place with a score of 2419 points. Gardner finished in third place in the 100m hurdles dash with a time of 15.21 and sixth in the 200m in a time of 21.02.

The Lakers will continue the GLIAC Championships tomorrow (May 2
nd) with the reminder of the heptathlon and decathlon events starting at 9:00 a.m. The field events will begin at 2:30 p.m. with the men's hammer throw, men's long jump and women's pole vault followed by the women's 1500m prelim to kick off the running events at 2:30 p.m.
In the men's hammer, the Lakers have three athletes competing with two athletes ranked within the Top 15 in Division II.
Matt Thomas and
Shane Byrne will lead in the hammer throw, ranking back-to-back in Division II, Thomas in 14
th and Byrne 15
th.
Chrisly Kelly-Cannon,
Luke Jelderks and
Caleb Taylor will take on the men's long jump beginning at 2:30 p.m. Kelly-Cannon is the current Grand Valley State record holder and ranks second in Division II All-Condition bests, while Jelderks ranks 12
th in Division II.
In the men's high jump, three Lakers are ranked within the Top 20 in Divison II led by
Wyatt Alwine and
Dolan Gonzales tied for 13
th, while
Max Rauch sits in 20
th.
Shelby Ulven,
Alaina Omonode and
Natalia Pluff will represent the Lakers in the women's weight throw beginning at 4:30 p.m. Ulven currently sits in second on the USTFCCCA Division II list followed by Omonode in sixth.
The high jump trio will begin competing at 5:00 p.m. led by the current Grand Valley State record holder,
Jaivon Harrison. Harrison ranks first in Division II and second in All-Collegiate within a personal-best of 2.26m.
Eli Kosiba sits right behind Harrison, ranking second in Division II with a height of 2.23m.
Jonathan Rankins-James the defending GLIAC Champion ranks seventh overall in Division II.
The running prelims will start with the women's 1500m, as
Landyn Howell and
Maria Mitchell will be representing Grand Valley State.
In the men's 1500m prelims,
Caleb Futter will be back on the track after setting a new Grand Valley State and facility record last week at the GVSU Extra Meet, recording a time of 3:43.12. Competing alongside Futter will be,
Cal Yackin and
Gabriel Connelly.
In the men's 110m hurdles, the Lakers will have three athletes competing led by
Steven Harris, who currently ranks 15
thin Division II. Additionally,
Joshua Hurt and
Ethan Smith will take on the men's 110m hurdles.
In the 800m, Grand Valley will have three athletes competing on both the men's and women's side. The women's 800m will begin at 4:25 p.m. with
Klaudia O'Malley,
Cameron Cleveland and
Sydney Nesbitt competing. O'Malley returns as the reigning GLIAC Champion in the 800m.
On the men's side,
Scott Spaanstra will defend his GLIAC title in the 800m alongside
Tyler Puskar and
Patrick Lyell.
In the final running events of the night,
Kayce Rypma,
Jordyn Hopgood and
Paige McAloon will take on the women's steeplechase, while
Caleb Futter and
Drennan Akins compete on the men's side. Rypma currently ranks 10
th in Division II for the women and Futter in fourth in Division II on the men's side. Additionally, Futter holds the Grand Valley State school record of 8:42.40.
