ALLENDALE – The No. 9 Grand Valley State softball team started their home schedule with a doubleheader sweep over Davenport Saturday (Apr. 6) afternoon at the GVSU Softball Field. The Lakers won game one 10-1 in six innings and game two 2-1 to improve to 21-7 on the season, 5-1 in the GLIAC.
Game One: W, 10-1 (Six Innings)
The Lakers opened up the scoring in the second inning.
Nevaeh Ingram got the Lakers on the board with an RBI single up the middle that scored
Megan Koenigshof. Next batter,
Faith Edwards singled up the middle bringing home
MaryJane Goodman. Two batters later with the bases loaded,
Morgan Spicer cleared the bases with a 3-run double to center field to put GVSU up 5-0.
Davenport got on the board in the third inning with a solo home run to left field. After two scoreless innings, the Lakers scored five runs in the sixth to claim the 10-1 mercy rule win. Ingram got the scoring started with an RBI single to left field to bring home
Jasmine Mauk. Two batters late when GVSU loaded the bases, Koenigshof scored on a fielder's choice error to increase the lead to 7-1. Next batter, Spicer singled to left field to bring home
Faith Edwards.
Kelsey Komorous notched an infield single to score the winning run and a Panther error added a 10th run.
Morgan Spicer led the Lakers going 3-4 at the plate with a double and four RBI's.
Nevaeh Ingram went 2-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored.
Faith Edwards batted 1-2 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Hannah Hollister scored two runs and drove in one run. Ingram got the start in the circle and tossed all six innings allowing just one run off four hits with four strikeouts. Ingram improved to 5-0 in the circle this season.
Game Two: W, 2-1
The Lakers opened up the scoring in the opening inning of game two.
Hannah Hollister and
Morgan Spicer led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Next batter,
Kelsey Komorous launched a double to right field to score both Hollister and Spicer.
Davenport scored their only run in the fifth inning off an RBI groundout. The Lakers would keep the Panthers off the scoreboard to claim the one-run win to sweep the doubleheader.
Ashley Platek got the start in the circle and tossed all seven innings allowing just one run off four hits with four strikeouts.
Morgan Spicer batted 2-3 with a run scored.
Hannah Hollister notched a hit and score one run.
Kelsey Komorous launched a double and drove in two runs.
Megan Koenigshof and
MaryJane Goodman each added a hit.
The Lakers will close out the weekend at home tomorrow (Apr. 7) when they host Saginaw Valley State in a GLIAC doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 PM at the GVSU Softball Field.
