ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State softball team returned home and swept Wayne State in a GLIAC doubleheader Sunday (Apr. 21) afternoon at the GVSU Softball Field. The Lakers improved to 30-13 and sit in first place in the GLIAC with a 13-7 mark.
Game One: W, 9-1 (6-Innings)
The Lakers opened the scoring in the second inning with two runs.
Jasmine Mauk singled to right field bringing home the pinch runner
Kenedy Coombe for the game's first run. Next batter,
Eliana Eiland made it 2-0 on a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed
Megan Koenigshof to score. GVSU made it 3-0 in the fifth inning off a
Kelsey Komorous sacrifice fly to left field to score
Hannah Hollister.
Wayne State got on the board in the top of the sixth with an RBI double to left center. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lakers brought across six runs to claim the 9-1 mercy win in six innings.
Morgan Spicer walked with the bases loaded for the first run of the inning.
Kelsey Komorous singled in the next at bat to left field scoring Eiland. Hollister would score to make it 6-1 off a Warrior error. Koenigshof kept the inning going with an RBI single to Spicer. Next batter,
MaryJane Goodman reached on an error that allowed both Ballard and
Faith Edwards to score to claim the eight-run mercy rule win.
Ashley Platek got the start in the circle and earned her eighth win of the season after tossing all six innings allowing just one run off four hits with three strikeouts.
Morgan Spicer and
Jasmine Mauk each went 2-3 with a run scored and RBI.
Hannah Hollister and
Eliana Eiland batted 1-3 each. Hollister scored two runs and walked while Eiland scored and rove in one run.
Kelsey Komorous added two RBI's and
Megan Koenigshof scored and drove in one run.
Game Two: W, 4-3
GVSU got on the board first in the opening inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
Hannah Hollister reached off a Warrior error and stole second during the next at bat. Two batters later,
Kelsey Komorous drove home Hollister for the first run of the game.
Wayne State took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. The Warriors notched a base hit and advanced the runner to second on a sacrifice bunt followed by an RBI single to center field to tie the game at one. Later in the inning, Wayne State loaded the bases and took the lead on a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Lakers regained the lead with a three-run fifth inning to go up 4-2.
Jasmine Mauk led the inning off with a walk.
MaryJane Goodman reached base on a Wayne State error. And both runners advanced to second and third off a sacrifice bunt. Hollister singled up the middle to score both Mauk and Goodman to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead. After Hollister stole second,
Morgan Spicer singled to center field to bring home Hollister to make it a 4-2 lead for GVSU. The Warriors would make it 4-3 in the sixth, but
Genesis Eggart would record the final five outs for the Lakers to earn her first save of the season.
Nevaeh Ingram got the start in the circle and improved to 7-0 on the season tossing 5.1 innings pitched allowing three runs off seven hits with one strikeout.
Hannah Hollister notched a hit with two RBI's and two runs scored.
Morgan Spicer and
Kelsey Komorous each went 1-3 with an RBI.
Megan Koenigshof added a hit, while
MaryJane Goodman and
Jasmine Mauk each scored a run.
The Lakers will close out the regular season next weekend at home when they host Purdue Northwest on Friday (Apr. 26) at 3:00 PM and Parkside on Saturday (Apr. 27) at 2:30 PM. All four games will be streamed live on FloSports.
