Lakers Split Friday Doubleheader vs Purdue Northwest

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State softball team split a GLIAC doubleheader against Purdue Northwest Friday (Apr. 26) afternoon. The Lakers move to 31-14 on the season and 14-8 in the GLIAC. 
 
Game One: W, 3-0
 
GVSU got off to a fast start and scored the first run of the game in the opening inning. Hannah Hollister led the game with a walk and scored later in the inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Liberti Fair
 
The Lakers doubled the lead in the fourth with an RBI by MaryJane Goodman to score the pinch runner Kenedy Coombe. GVSU added one run in the third off a Kelsey Komorous double that scored Morgan Spicer all the way from first.
 
Ashley Platek got the start in the circle and tossed a complete game shutout allowing just six hits with three strikeouts. Morgan Spicer and Kelsey Komorous each batted 2-3 while Spicer scored a run and Komorous drove in one run. Hannah Hollister went 1-2 with a run scored and a walk, while Liberti Fair added a hit and RBI.
 
Game Two: L, 4-3
 
GVSU scored the first run of the game in the first inning in game two. Megan Koenigshof drove home Hannah Hollister with a single through the right side. Purdue Northwest scored their first runs of the day in the fifth inning taking a 2-1 lead. The Pride tied the game with a sacrifice fly and took the lead off an RBI single to left field. 
 
The Lakers responded and regained the lead with a two-run bottom of the fifth inning. Liberti Fair tied the game with an RBI single to center field that scored Hollister. Two batters later, MaryJane Goodman singled to center field scoring Faith Edwards to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead.
 
In the sixth inning, Purdue Northwest scored two run to regain their lead. The Pride tied the game with an RBI single through the right side. Later in the inning, Purdue Northwest would take a 4-3 lead off an RBI single up the middle. The Pride would hang on for a one-run game two win after not allowing the Lakers to find the equalizer.
 
Genesis Eggart got the start in the circle and suffered the loss after tossing seven innings allowing four runs off eight hits with eight strikeouts. Hannah Hollister batted 2-3 with two runs scored and a walk. Megan Koenigshof went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI. Liberti Fair and MaryJane Goodman each added a hit and RBI.
 
The Lakers will close out the regular season tomorrow (Apr. 27) at home when they host Parkside in a GLIAC doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 2:30 PM at the GVSU Softball Field.
