Grand Valley Closes Out Day Two in California

The Grand Valley State track and field team finished day two of four out on the west coast, as they competed within three meets on Thursday, April 11th. The Lakers' jump crew took on the final day of the Cal. St. L.A. Twilight Open, while the throws team and pole vaulters competed at the Pacific Coast Invitational, and the distance crew took on the first day of the Bryan Clay Invitational. 

In Los Angeles, CA. at the Cal. St. L.A. Twilight Open, Alaina Diaz finished in first place in the women's long jump with a new personal-best distance of 5.92m. 

Joslyn Bentz and Sydney Cangilla both cleared a height of 1.62m in the women's high jump, earning second (Bentz) and fourth (Cangilla). 

At the Pacific Coast Invitational, Myles Kerner and Matt Thomas both finished in the Top 5 in the men's shot put. Kerner claimed first place with a throw of 19.30m and Thomas in fourth with a distance of 18.14m. 

In the women's shot put, the Lakers finished with three athletes in the Top 20 led by Mackenzie Bohrer. Bohrer earned 13th place overall with a throw of 14.51m, followed by Margaret Stevenson in 18th with a distance of 14.03m and Reette Thorns in 20th with a throw of 13.68m.

Erika Beistle recorded a new personal-best in the women's discus for the second weekend in a row, throwing a distance of 56.10m. Besitle finished in fourth place overall and currently ranks first overall in Division II. 

Grand Valley State ended their night at the Bryan Clay Invitational with the men's and women's steeplechase. 

In the women's steeplechase open, Kayce Rypma finished in eighth place with a time of 10:31.12 followed by Landyn Howell in 11th with a new personal-best time of 10:33.33 and Maria Mitchell in 18th recording a time of 10:37.98.

On the men's side, Caleb Futter earned 22nd place and recorded a time of 8:42.63, just shy of a new personal-best.

The Lakers continue their weekend west coast trip at day two of the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, CA and the beginning of the Beach Invitational over in Long Beach, CA. 

The Beach Invitational will kick off on Friday, April 12th at 12:00 p.m. (ET) and go through Saturday the 13th

The Grand Valley State throws crew will be taking on the Beach Invitational on both Friday and Saturday. Shane Byrne and Matt Thomas will take on the men's hammer throw to start day one beginning at 12:00 p.m. (ET). While Shelby Ulven and Alaina Omonode take on the women's hammer at 6:45 p.m. (ET). 

Bobby Maxwell will compete in the men's javelin starting at 5:00 p.m. (ET). 

On Saturday, April 13th, the men's and women's shot put and discus team will compete for the Lakers. In the men's shot put, Myles Kerner and Matt Thomas will start the day at 1:00 p.m. (ET) followed by Erika Beistle and Margaret Stevenson in the women's discus at 1:00 p.m. (ET). 

The women's shot put and men's discus will end the night for Grand Valley State at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, CA at 5:00 p.m. (ET). The Lakers will have five athletes in the women's shot put, Erika Beistle, Mackenzie Bohrer, Reette Thorns, Paige Westra and Margaret Stevenson

In the men's discus, Nathan Spitzley and James MacKey JR. will be competing for the Lakers. 

At the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, CA, the distance crew will take on the men's and women's 5000m as well as the 800m, while the throws team will compete in the men's and women's discus, in addition to, the men's high jump will be competing at 3:00 p.m. (ET).

Jaivon Harrison, Jonathan Rankins-James, Eli Kosiba and Caleb Taylor will all represent Grand Valley in the men's high jump. 

Taryn Chapko will compete in the women's 800m invite beginning at 7:25 p.m. (ET), while Scott Spaanstra will compete in the men's invite at 8:20 p.m. (ET).

The Lakers will have three men competing in three different heats of 5000m beginning at 10:32 p.m. (ET). Conor Somers will compete in the 5000m open (HT2), Tanner Chada in the 5000m open (HT3) and Koby Fraaza in the 5000m Invite (HT4). 

Klaudia O'Malley will be the only Laker on the women's side to take on the 5000m, competing in the invite section (HT3).
