MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team advanced to the GLIAC Championship game after defeating top seeded Northern Michigan 92-77 in the semifinals Saturday, Marth 9
th. The Lakers improve to 16-14 on the season.
William Dunn led the Lakers in scoring with 23 points on 7-10 shooting including 5-7 from three.
Britain Harris notched 20 points and 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Harris shot 9-16 shooting from the field including two 3-pointers and three assists.
Marius Grazulis scored 14 points 5-6 shooting, while
Trevor Smith added 13 points going 5-6 from the free throw line.
GVSU shot 55% from the field and 12-21 from three for a 57% clip. The Lakers also went 18-21 from the free throw line for 85%. GVSU outrebounded Northern Michigan 34-28 and blocked six shots to the Wildcats zero.
Both teams shot the ball at a high clip in the first half. Northern Michigan went into the break with a 49-42 lead. The Wildcats shot 58% from the field and 46% from three in the first half. GVSU shot 50% from the field and 53% from the field.
In the second half, the Lakers started on a 15-4 run, taking a 58-53 lead. Dunn scored eight of the first 10 Laker points to begin the half. Harris would score eight straight points to bring the lead up to 62-56 with just under 14 minutes remaining.
Northern Michigan would answer with a 12-5 run to regain the lead at 68-67 with eight minutes to play. GVSU answered with a 9-0 run to pull back in front 76-68. After Northern Michigan went on a 7-2 run to pull within three, Smith drained a big three with under four minutes to play to go back up six.
GVSU would end the final four minutes of play with a 14-2 run to pull away for the win.
Mason Docks drained a three from the right wing with two minutes to play that would end up being the dagger, putting GVSU up double digits.
GVSU advances to the GLIAC Championship game tomorrow (Mar. 10) at 2:00 PM in Marquette, Michigan. The Lakers will play the winner of the second semifinal game between Ferris State and Wayne State.
