Grand Valley State Set to Compete at 2024 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Nationals

PITTSBURG, KANSAS – The Grand Valley State track and field program is set to compete at the 2024 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Nationals on Friday, March 8th through the 9th. This year's championships will be held in Pittsburg, Kansas at the Robert W. Plaster Center, hosted by Pittsburg State.

Grand Valley State will have a total of 30 individual entries, 18 on the women's side and 12 on the men's. Additionally, the Lakers will have both a men's and women's DMR squad as well as a 4x400m relay team. 

Day one of the NCAA Track & Field Nationals will kick off at 10:00 a.m. (CT), while the Lakers won't start competing until 2:25 p.m. (CT) with the men's weight throw. Shane Byrne, Myles Kerner and James Mackey JR. will be Grand Valley State's first set of athletes to compete this weekend as they take on the weight throw. Additionally, the Lakers are the only team in the men's weight throw event to have more than one athlete competing.

MacKey Jr., Byrne and Kerner all find themselves on the USTFCCCA Top 25 List, ranking eighth (MacKey Jr.), 10th(Byrne) and 11th (Kerner), all throwing over 20.20m. 

Taylor DeHommel will compete in the women's pole vault starting at 3:25 p.m. (CT), DeHommel is currently ranked 10thon the USTFCCCA Top 25 list with a personal-best of 4.02m.

The prelims of the men's mile will begin at 3:30 p.m. (CT) followed by the women's prelims shortly after. Grand Valley State has four Lakers taking on the mile on Friday, two on the men's and two on the women's. Caleb Futter and Patrick Lyell will represent the Lakers for the men, while Klaudia O'Malley and Maria Mitchell take on the women's side. 

All four runners find themselves on the Top 25 List in Division II, Futter in third and Lyell in 14th on the men's side while O'Malley and Mitchell both rank in the Top 10 for the women, O'Malley in fourth and Mitchell in ninth.

The 800m prelims will start at 4:40 p.m. (CT) with the men, followed by the women's 800m prelims shortly after. Scott Spaanstra and Taryn Chapko will take on the 800m prelims on their respective sides for Grand Valley. The top two within each heat plus the next two best times will advance to the finals on Saturday. 

The women's weight throw will be the final field event of day one, starting at 4:55 p.m. (CT). The Grand Valley will have two Lakers taking on the women's weight throw, Alaina Omonode and Shelby Ulven. Omonode currently sit in the Top 3 in Division II with a personal-best of 19.75m, while Ulven ranks 17th with a distance of 18.46m.

The Lakers biggest event of the day takes place at 6:15 p.m. (CT), the women's 5000m. Grand Valley State will have five athletes taking on this event, the most athletes participating from one team. The women's distance crew consists of Natalie Graber, Ana Tucker, Lauren Kiley, Kayce Rypma and Abby VanderKooi, all being apart of the 2023 Cross Country National Championship team. 

Day one concludes with the men's and women's DMR, beginning at 6:40 p.m. (CT). The men's DMR squad consists of Patrick Lyell, Myles Rhodes, Scott Spaanstra and Caleb Futter. The women's DMR includes Maria Mitchell, Kate Zang, Taryn Chapko, and Natalie Graber
