WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The No. 5 Grand Valley State softball team improved their win streak to nine games after defeating Dominican (N.Y.) 10-2 in five innings and SW Minnesota State 10-0 in five innings. The Lakers improved to 12-3 on the season.
Game One vs Dominican (N.Y.) – W, 10-2
GVSU opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning off the bat of
Kelsey Komorous. Komorous ripped a double to score Hollister from third and Spicer from first. Next batter,
Jenna Ballard singled to center field to score Komorous to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.
The Lakers doubled the lead in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead.
Faith Edwards got the scoring started on a sacrifice fly to right field to score
Eliana Eiland. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Komorous notched a 2-run single through the left side scoring
Christine Duch and
Hannah Hollister.
GVSU would run away with it in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
Kylie Sinal singled up the middle to bring home
Megan Koenigshof. Two batter later,
Faith Edwards launched a 3-run home run to left field for her first collegiate home run.
Dominican would score two in the fifth, but the Lakers would close it out for the mercy rule win in five innings.
Kylie Swierkos got the start in the circle and earned the win (2-1) tossing four innings allowing no runs off four hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Kelsey Komorous went 2-4 at the plate with a double, four runs batted in, and a run scored.
Jenna Ballard and
MaryJane Goodman each batted 2-3 while Ballard added an RBI.
Faith Edwards launched a home run and drove in four runs, while
Hannah Hollister scored two runs in the win.
Game two vs Southwest Minnesota State – W, 10-0
The Lakers jumped out to an early lead in the first inning.
Kelsey Komorous launched a 2-run home run to center field for her second of the season. GVSU would score three runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Carsyn Segorski led the inning off with a solo home run to left field for her second of the season. Komorous added to the lead later in the inning with a 2-run double to score
Eliana Eiland and
Hannah Hollister.
GVSU took a commanding 9-0 lead with a 4-run third inning.
Megan Koenigshof and
Liberti Fair scored off a Southwest Minnesota State throwing error to go up 7-0. Later in the inning,
Hannah Hollister would score off a throwing error. Next at bat, Komorous drove home
Morgan Spicer. The Laker would go up 10-0 in the fourth off a Hollister RBI single and would close it in the fifth for the mercy rule win.
Genesis Eggart got the start in the circle and earned the win (5-0) after tossing all five inning allowing no runs off three hits with five strikeouts and zero walks.
Kelsey Komorous went 3-3 with a home run, double, and four RBIs.
Hannah Hollister batted 2-3 with three runs scored and one RBI.
Megan Koenigshof and
Carsyn Segorski each added a hit in the win.
The Lakers will get the day off tomorrow and will be back on the diamond on Thursday (Mar. 7) for two games. GVSU will play Missouri – St. Louis at 10:00 AM and Saint Rose at 12:15 PM. Both games will be streamed live on FloSports.
