Lakers Improve Win Streak to 11 Games After Two Mercy Rule Wins Thursday

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The No. 5 Grand Valley State softball team improved their winning streak to 11 games with a pair of five inning mercy rule wins Thursday (Mar. 7) at the Spring Games. The Lakers improved to 14-3 after defeating Missouri – St. Louis 9-1 and Saint Rose 9-0. 
 
Game One vs Missouri – St. Louis – W, 9-1 (Five Innings)
 
The Lakers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Hannah Hollister led the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Morgan Spicer drove her home with a single up the middle to open the scoring. Next batter, Kelsey Komorous launched a 2-run home run to right field for her third of the season.
 
Missouri – St. Louis would score in the second inning to cut the lead to two. The Lakers would extend the lead with 4-run fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead. Hollister and Komorous singled and were brought home off the bat of MaryJane Goodman who doubled to right field. Megan Koenigshof would drive home the pinch runner Kenedy Coombe with a single. Goodman would score later in the inning off an RBI groundout.
 
The Lakers would score two in the fifth to claim the mercy rule win in five innings. Jasmine Mauk walked and stole second next at bat. After a Missouri – St. Louis error, Hollister doubled to left center to score Mauk. Spicer would single the next at bat to score Eiland, walking it off for the Lakers in five innings. 
 
Kylie Swierkos got the start in the circle and earned the win (3-1) after tossing five innings allowing one run off four hits with two strikeouts. Morgan Spicer batted 3-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Kelsey Komorous went 2-3 at the plate with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Hannah Hollister hit 2-3 with a double, two runs scored, and RBI. MaryJane Goodman drove in two runs and scored one run.
 
Game Two vs Saint Rose – W, 9-0 (Five Innings)
 
GVSU opened the scoring in the top of the first with one run to go up 1-0. Kelsey Komorous notched her team leading 23rd RBI of the season on an RBI single scoring Hannah Hollister. The Lakers would score four runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Morgan Spicer notched a 2-RBI single to score Faith Edwards and Hollister. Two batters later, Jenna Ballard singled to center field to bring home Spicer. MaryJane Goodman hit a sacrifice fly to score Komorous.
 
GVSU added another run in the sixth off a Hollister RBI single up the middle bringing home Jasmine Mauk. The Lakers would score three in the fourth to take a commanding 9-0 lead. Mauk drove home two runs off a single up the middle and scored on an Edwards triple to right field. GVSU would shutout Saint Rose to earn the five-inning mercy rule win. 
 
Nevaeh Ingram got the start in the circle and earned the win (3-0) after tossing all five innings allowing no runs off one hit with six strikeouts. Jasmine Mauk went 2-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Hannah Hollister batted 2-3 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored. Kelsey Komorous hit 2-3 with a run scored and RBI. Morgan Spicer added a run scored and two RBIs. 
 
The Lakers will be back for two more games at the Sping Games tomorrow (Mar. 8) in Winter Haven, Florida. The Lakers will face California (Pa.) at 10:15 AM and Missouri – St. Louis again at 12:30 PM. Both games can be watched live on FloSports.
