GVSU Baseball Splits DH With Nationally-Ranked Wayne State

The Lakers win game two 6-1

Grand Valley State (13-12, 5-3 GLIAC) split a GLIAC doubleheader Saturday versus 15th-ranked Wayne State in the home opener for the Lakers. The Warriors won game one 5-3, while the Lakers won the nightcap 6-1. GVSU will host Parkside next weekend in a four-game GLIAC set, with Saturday being billed as Back to the Ballpark Day. Free Jimmy John's and free Culver's custard in GVSU mini baseball helmets will be available. 

Game 1 – The Lakers opened with four consecutive hits as SS Connor Schuman, CF Kyle Nott and LF Ryan Dykstra all singled to load the bases. 3B Jonas Gulbrandsen singled home Schuman and RF Nathan Logan scored Nott with sac fly to give GVSU a 2-0 lead. 
 
All five of Wayne State's runs came with two outs and two strikes. A 3-run home run in the top of the fourth, a seeing eye single scored a run fifth and a solo home run in the top of the seventh added an insurance run.
 
C Brendan Guciardo singled home Logan with two outs to bring the Lakers within one (4-3) in the bottom of the sixth. 
 
GVSU tallied eight hits, led by Schuman who was 2-4 with a run scored. Nott was 1-3 with a run scored, Logan was 1-2 with an RBI and run scored, Gulbrandsen was 1-3 with and RBI, Guciardo was 1-3 with an RBI and Logan Anderson doubled. 
 
Mike Riley was tagged with the loss, yielding four runs on six hits in 4.2 innings with five strikeouts. Sam Leck went the final 2.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit with two strikeouts. 

Game 2 – Wayne State struck first with two doubles in the first off starter Mike Morawski. However, that is all the offense that the Warriors would put together during the 9-inning contest. 
 
GVSU tied the game in the fifth when Schuman singled in 2B Jake Rydquist. The Lakers took a 4-1 lead in the sixth on three hits, two hit by pitches and a walk. Gulbrandsen and Logan opened the inning with singles and Guciardo followed with an RBI single that scored Gulbrandsen. Anderson was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Rydquist was hit by a pitch that scored Logan. Nott walked with two outs to plate Guciardo and give the Lakers a 4-1 lead. 
 
The Lakers closed the scoring in the seventh when Gulbrandsen and Guciardo each hit a solo home run to left to up the lead to 6-1. 
 
GVSU collected 12 hits in the game, highlighted by Guciardo's 3-4 outing with two RBI and two runs scored. Ryquist was 2-3 with a double and run scored, while Gulbrandswn was 2-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Schuman was 2-5 with an RBI, Logan was 1-4 with a run scored. DH MacArthur Graybill was 1-4, while Anderson was 1-3 with a double. 
 
Morawski (2-2) pitched a gem, yielding one run on six hits in 7.1 innings with five strikeouts. Ayden VanEnkevort yielded one hit in 1.1 innings and Will Goebel got the final out on one pitch.
