Lakers Finish Day Two in Texas and North Carolina

The Grand Valley State track and field program finished out day two of three, at their trio of meets this weekend. The Lakers continued their time down in Texas at the Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational, as well as the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina. 

Texas Relays
The Texas Relays in Austin, Texas kicked off day two for Grand Valley State as the throws and sprints crew competed this morning. 

The throws crew had five athletes competing today, two in the men's discus and three in the women's shot put. Nathan Spitzley and James Mackey JR. went back to back earning 10th and 11th overall. Spitzley. threw a distance of 49.61m and Mackey JR. a throw of 48.49m.

In the women's shot put, Mackenzie Bohrer finished in sixth place with a throw of 14.35m followed by Reette Thorns in eighth with a distance of 14.23m and Paige Westra in ninth with a throw of 14.08m. 

On the track, the men's 4x100m relay consisting of Chrisly Kelly-Cannon, Antonio Passarelli, Steven Harris and Myles Rhodes recorded a new personal-best time of 41.03. 

In the 100m dash, two Lakers set a new personal-best time on both the men's and women's sides. Antonio Passarelli recorded a time of 10.53, while Taylor Kyle recorded a time of 11.98. 

Freshman Joshua Hurt, set a new personal-best time of 14.37 in the men's 110m hurdles.

Bobcat Invitational
At the Bobcat Invitational, the jumps crew recorded two new personal-bests in the men's long jump. Chrisly Kelly-Cannon earned fifth place with a jump of 7.89m, ranking him first in Division II as well as now holding the Grand Valley State All-Conditions record in the men's long jump. Luke Jelderks finished in 15th place, recording a new best jump of 7.53m and ranking fifth in Division II. 

In the men's hammer throw, Matt Thomas claimed a first place finish for the Lakers as he recorded a new personal-best throw of 61.00m. James Mackey JR. finished in seventh place with another personal-best of 50.00m. 

On the track, Myles Rhodes recorded a personal-best in the men's 200m finishing in 16th place with a time of 21.13. Rhodes now ranks ninth overall in Division II. 

Raleigh Relays
The women's distance crew concluded day two of the Raleigh Relays as they competed in within four events this afternoon. 

Natalie Graber recorded a new personal-best in the women's 5000m, as she finished in 17th place out of 195 athletes with a time of 16:02.45, taking off a full six seconds from her previous best. 

In the women's 1500m, Klaudia O'Malley finished in 32nd place recording a time of 4:22.39, Taryn Chapko a time of 4:27.59 and Maria Mitchell in a time of 4:43.76. 

Landyn Howell led the Lakers in the women's 3000m steeplechase, as she recorded a new personal-best time of 10:38.70, earning 26th place overall. Kayce Rypma finished in 34th place with a time of 10:57.44, followed by Jordyn Hopgood in a time of 11:10.23.
 
Up Next – Final Day
The Lakers will close out their three-day weekend on Saturday, March 30th starting at both the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Tx and the Texas Relays. Grand Valley State will kick off their last day with the men's and women's hammer throw at 11:00 a.m. (ET), as well as the women's discus at 11:00 a.m. (ET) down in Austin. 

Additionally, the Lakers' pole vault crew will be competing at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio starting at 11:00 a.m. (ET) with the men's pole vault, followed by the women at 2:00 p.m. (ET). 

The distance crew will close out their time at the Raleigh Relays beginning at 1:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday with the women's 800m.

Bobcat Invitational
Shane Byrne, Shelby Ulven and Alaina Omondoe will be taking on the men's and women's hammer throw in their respective sides starting at 11:00 a.m. (ET). The throws team will finish out their time at the Bobcat Invitational with the women's shot put at 3:30 p.m. (ET). The Lakers will have three athletes in the shot put, Mackenzie Bohrer, Reette Thorns and Paige Westra

The sprints crew will close out their time at the Bobcat Invitational at 2:30 p.m. with the men's and women's 4x100m relays. The women's relay team will consist of Melia Williams, Taylor Kyle, Isabel Abdouch, Kate Zang, Catherine Guckenberger and Alaina Diaz. While the men's relay team is made up of Chrisly Kelly-Cannon, Max Darling, Antonio Passarelli, Myles Rhodes, Steven Harris and Zach Pray

In the 100m/110m hurdles, Grand Valley will have four Lakers total competing, two for the women and two for the men. Brooke Barkocy and Destini Dorkins look to take on the 100m hurdles, while Steven Harris and Joshua Hurt will represent the men in the 110m hurdles. 

Myles Rhodes, Zach Pray and Ben Ireland will all be competing in the men's 400m dash, beginning at 4:50 p.m. (ET). 

The Lakers' will end the night with the men's and women's 4x400m relay at 5:45 p.m. (ET). The women's 4x400m team will consist of Abdouch, Diaz, Gluck, Zang and Guckenberger, while Pray, Ireland, Gaye, Rhodes, and Harris make up the men's team. 

Texas Relays
The final day of the Texas Relays will consist of only three events for the Lakers, the women's discus, the men's high jump and the men's shot put. 

Margaret Stevenson will be representing Grand Valley in the women's discus at 11:00 a.m. (ET). This will be Stevenson's third event of the weekend. 

The men's high jump trio, Jaivon Harrison, Eli Kosiba and Jonathan Rankins-James are set to compete in the high jump section "A" at 3:45 p.m. (ET). All three athletes will be competing for the first time since the 2024 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Nationals, where Harrison claimed the individual title, Rankins-James earned runner-up and Kosiba placed sixth overall. 

The Lakers time at the Texas Relays will end with the men's shot put beginning at 5:00 p.m. (ET). Myles Kerner and Matt Thomas will be the final two Lakers to compete. Kerner will open up his outdoor season known as the 2024 National Champion in the men's indoor shot put. 

Raleigh Relays
The men's and women's distance crew will kick of their final day in Raleigh, North Carolina with the women's 800m at 1:30 p.m. (ET). 

The Laker women will have five athletes competing in the 800m led by Taryn Chapko, Klaudia O'Malley, Maria Mitchell, Cameron Cleveland and Sydney Nesbitt
The men's 800m will consist of three Laker athletes, Caleb Futter, Patrick Lyell and Quinton Bauer

Additionally, Grand Valley will have a men's and women's 4x400m relay team competing at 5:15 p.m. (ET). 

Oliver Nikoloff Invitational
The Grand Valley State pole vault team will open up their weekend on Saturday as they begin jumping at 11:00 a.m. (ET). 

The Lakers will have 10 athletes competing between the men's and women's pole vault teams. 

The men's crew will consist of Wyatt Alwine, Colton Emeott, James Nutt, Dolan Gonzales and Max Rauch

The women's team will be made up of Taylor DeHommel, Miranda Firari, Lily Renfrew, Kendyl Hahlen and Rileigh Lacy
