HAMMOND, Ind. – The No. 7 Grand Valley State softball team began their GLIAC schedule with a doubleheader sweep at Purdue Northwest Sunday (Mar. 24) afternoon. The Lakers improved to 18-5 after winning game one 11-4 and game two 4-0.
Game One: W, 11-4
The Lakers opened up the scoring with a seven-run third inning.
Hannah Hollister led the inning off with a walk and stole second during the next at bat.
Morgan Spicer singled and advanced to second to put runners on second and third with no outs. Next batter,
Kelsey Komorous drove home Hollister for the game's first run.
Jenna Ballard singled to bring home Spicer making it 2-0. Next batter,
MaryJane Goodman tripled to right field to score home Ballard. Goodman scored later in the inning off an RBI single by
Megan Koenigshof to make it 4-0. Later in the inning, Spicer drove home two runs with a single through the right side to put the Lakers up 7-0.
Purdue Northwest got on the board with one run in the bottom half of the third inning. GVSU quickly answered with two runs in the top of the fourth off a 2-RBI double by
Natalie Johnson that scored Koenigshof and Goodman.
The Pride would score two runs in the sixth to cut the lead to six. The Lakers would score two runs in the seventh to increase the lead back up to eight. Koenigshof doubled to left field scoring Spicer and Ballard.
Nevaeh Ingram got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing all seven innings allowing four runs with three strikeouts.
Megan Koenigshof went 2-4 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored.
Morgan Spicer hit 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Natalie Johnson added a two-RBI double, while
Jenna Ballard and
MaryJane Goodman each added an RBI and two runs scored.
Game Two: W, 4-0
GVSU took the early lead in the opening inning.
Hannah Hollister led the inning off with a single and would score later in the inning off a wild pitch. The Lakers would double the lead in the third inning off an RBI by
Kelsey Komorous that scored the pinch runner
Kenedy Coombe.
The Lakers scored two more runs in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 4-0.
Liberti Fair and
Eliana Eiland led off the inning with a walk and single. Two batters later,
Morgan Spicer doubled to left center to bring home Fair. Later in the inning
Jenna Ballard scored Eiland to make it 4-0.
Kylie Swierkos got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing all seven innings allowing no runs with two strikeouts.
Hannah Hollister went 2-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases.
Morgan Spicer notched an RBI double, while
Kelsey Komorous added an RBI.
The Lakers will return to the diamond next week when they travel to face Lewis in a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 27
