GVSU Baseball Claims DH Sweep Vs. Parkside To Open GLIAC Play

Lakers win 7-2 and 12-1

Grand Valley State (10-8, 2-0 GLIAC) swept a GLIAC doubleheader Saturday from Parkside at Saint Xavier University in Chicago, Ill. The game was played at Saint Xavier due to snow in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Lakers won game one 7-2, followed by a 12-1 victory in game two. GVSU will play Saginaw Valley State Sunday at Orzinga Field in Crestwood, Illinois Sunday (Mar. 24). First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (ET).
 
Parkside took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first, but right fielder Nate Logan singled with one out in the fourth and advanced to second on a throwing error. Pinch hitter Connor McCormack tripled home Logan and catcher Brennan Guciardo singled home McCormack to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead. 
 
SS Connor Schuman singled to open the fifth, followed by a 10-pitch at bat from CF Kyle Nott that ended with a walk. Schuman and Nott advance on a double steal and 3B Jonas Gulbrandsen singled to left to score Schuman and Nott. After a Logan groundout advanced Gulbrandsen to third McCormack hit a 2-run home run to left to up the Laker lead to 6-1. Guciardo opened the top seventh with a double and scored on a Jake Rydquist single to right.
 
Nick Rutkowski (3-1) picked up the win, yielding 1 run on two hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Logan Wynalda went the final two innings.

Game 2
 
The Lakers scored five runs on one hit in the top of the second. RF Nate Logan was hit by a pitch and DH Connor McCormack followed with a single. From that point on two walks, two hit by pitch and two Ranger errors led to five GVSU runs. C Nick Krstich and Nott plated runs with a walk and hit by pitch. 
 
The Lakers added seven runs on six hits in the sixth inning. McCormack doubled and scored on a Krstich single. Schuman and Dkykstra singled in runs and Logan cleared the bases with a grand slam over the right field wall. 
 
Redshirt freshman Owen Avery picked up the win, giving up one run on one hit with six strikeouts in five innings. Brendan Alvord went three innings, yielding just one hit, while Brendan Pierce pitched the final frame.
