Lakers End Regular Season On 11-Game Winning Streak As They Take Down Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, MICH. – The GVSU women's basketball team finished out the regular season this afternoon in a matchup against Michigan Tech. The game was a defensive battle throughout, but the Lakers were able to come away with a 57-46 victory. The win moved them to 26-2 overall, and 17-1 in league play, as they head into the postseason on an 11-game winning streak.
 
GVSU got out to a 6-2 lead in the first quarter following an Abrie Cabana triple with 3:38 to play in the period. From then on, the two teams locked in defensively, as they combined for just five points the rest of the way, with the Lakers leading 8-5.
 
A Rylie Bisballe layup put the Lakers up by five early in the second quarter. Michigan Tech came back to tie the game at 12. Bisballe put the Lakers back in front with a three-pointer. They would never relinquish that lead the rest of the game, leading by five at the break, 22-17.
 
After the Huskies cut the lead down to three, trailing 24-21, but GVSU ended the quarter on a 19-9 run, getting threes from Lexi Plitzuweit, Cabana, and Hadley Miller, to lead 43-30 heading into the fourth.
 
The Lakers were able to build their lead up to 18 points midway through the fourth quarter. Michigan Tech answered back and made it a nine-point game with just over a minute to play, but could not get any closer, as GVSU was able to ice it with free throws.
 
Rylie Bisballe had another big game, scoring 17 points, grabbing nine rebounds, and notching five steals. Abrie Cabana scored seven, and Paige Vanstee had six points and five boards. Lexi Plitzuweit scored five points, pulled down six rebounds, and had three assists.
 
Up Next
GVSU begins the postseason next Wednesday at home for the GLIAC Quarterfinal. The Lakers will play Purdue Northwest, and the game will tip at 6:00.
