GVSU Wrestling Earns Two All-America Honors; Josh Kenny Advances To 174 Semifinals

03.15.2024

Grand Valley State secured two All-American spots Saturday at the 2024 NCAA DII Wrestling National Championships and finished the opening day with 16.5 points, good for 16th place for the first-year reinstated program. Sophomore Josh Kenny will wrestle in the semifinals at 174, while Wyatt Miller advanced to All-America stats with a pair of wins in the blood round.

Fourth-seeded Kenny (30-5) opened with a 12-1 major decision win over Jonathan Parrilla from Millersville, followed by a 4-1 sudden victory win over Matt Ortiz of McKendree. Kenny completed a slick duck under move early in overtime to secure the win and his advancement into the semifinals. He will face Brody Hemauer from Wisconsin-Parkside for a spot in the Saturday night National Championship match.

Unseeded Miller (31-6) opened with a win by fall (4:20) in his opening-round pigtail match that moved him into the bracket. He then dropped a tough 4-3 decision to fifth-seeded Dakota Rodgers from Pitt-Johnstown, but took down fourth-seeded Caden Steffen from Southwest Minnesota Sate by a 7-2 decision in his first consolation match. Miller then claimed an incredible 9-6 blood round victory over Tereus Henry of Fort Hays State to secure his All-America honor. He will face seventh-seeded Max Ramberg from Augustana (S.D.) in a quarterfinal consolation round match.

Third-seeded Chris Donathan (25-3) opened with a 4-2 victory over Devan Moore from Newberry, but dropped an 18-11 slugfest to sixth-seeded Dylan Brown from Central Oklahoma. Donathan then dropped his first consolation round match by a 9-3 score.

Unseeded Seth Konynenbelt lost his first two matches by fall and finished an incredible senior season with a 27-16 record.

"What a day," said first-year head coach Joey Simcoe. "The emotional highs and lows you feel as a coach for your wrestlers is draining, but at the same time it is the most incredible feeling you have in coaching. I am so proud of these four young men for what they have accomplished, but we still have work to do on Saturday and that is an incredible story for first-year reinstated program," added Simcoe.
