Grand Valley State wrestling will compete at the NCAA Division II National Championships for the first time in 32 years Friday (March 15) in Wichita, Kansas at the Hartman Center. GVSU, which reinstated wrestling as a varsity sport in 2023, will have four wrestlers competing. Led by Super Region 3 Coach of the Year Joey Simcoe, the return for wrestling as a varsity sport has been nothing short of amazing with a quick assent in the rankings. The Lakers closed the regular season ranked 13th in the final NWCA Coaches poll, with three wrestlers ranked among the top 10 nationally. Friday's action will begin at 11 a.m. (ET).

Sophomore Chris Donathan is seeded third at 149 with a 24-1 record. Donathan finished second at the Super Region 3 tournament, dropping a tight and controversial match in the finals to top-ranked Christian Small of Lake Erie. Donathan qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2020, but the tournament was cancelled due to covid. He has eight pins, five tech falls and two major decisions on the year.

Sophomore Josh Kenny claimed the 2024 Super Region 3 title at 174 and is seeded fourth with a 28-5 record. Kenny has four pins, 13 tech falls and six major decisions on the year.

Sophomore Wyatt Miller is ranked 10th nationally and enters action at the NCAA Championships with a 28-5 record. Miller has eight falls, seven tech falls and four major decisions on the year.

Senior Seth Konynenbelt enters the NCAA Championships with a 27-14 record at 184. Konynenbelt battled through the blood round at the regional tournament and claimed a tough decision in the third-place match to advance to his first-ever NCAA Championship.

"I am so proud of this group and we were so close to getting another three wrestlers through to the NCAA Championships," said head coach Joey Simcoe. "What we have accomplished in our first year on the mat is amazing and we have established a culture of wrestling that we will now build on for our future NCAA Tournament runs."
