Lakers Host Annual BIG Meet This Weekend

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State track and field program will host the annual Big Meet on Friday, February 9th – Saturday the 10th in the Kelly Family Sports Center. The Big Meet will bring in just over 100 different teams and almost 1800 athletes on Friday alone. The meet will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday with the early open running sections, followed by the remainder of the meet starting at 2:00 p.m. 
 
On Saturday, February 10th, day two of the Big Meet will start at 10:00 a.m. with the 3000m on the track and the women's weight throw and men's shot put in the circle.

The Big Meet will highlight multiple athletes at Grand Valley State that are currently ranked as the best in the Division II, in their respective events. The Lakers' throws crew finds themselves claiming 10 spots on the USTFCCCA Top 25 list, all making their way inside the Top 20 mark. 
 
The women's shot put squad claims four spots in the Top 15, led by Erika Beistle who sits on top with a distance of 16.77m. Mackenzie Bohrer ranks sixth (15.12m), Paige Westra ranks 11th (14.68m) and Reette Thorns ranks 15th(14.33m). All four lady Lakers will be competing on Friday in the shot put invite. Alaina Omonode and Shelby Ulven will be competing in the women's weight throw, Omonode ranks 11th with a throw of 18.63m while Ulven ranks 15th(17.99m). 
 
On the men's side, the Division II men's shot put leader, Myles Kerner, will be competing at 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Kerner leads Division II with a throw distance of 19.32m, in addition to ranking 10th on the Collegiate Top 25 List. Shane Byrne and James MacKey Jr. will be competing in the men's weight throw invite for Grand Valley State. Byrne currently ranks eighth (20.12m) and MacKey in 17th (19.48m)

The men's high jump crew continues to be on the verge of breaking the Grand Valley State school record, with three great contenders on the hunt. Jonathan Rankins-James, Eli Kosiba and Jaivon Harrison all rank within the Top 5 in Division II. Rankins-James leading the way with a height of 2.22m, Kosiba tied for second with a height of 2.20m and Harrison ranking fifth with a height of 2.18m. 
 
After breaking the Ashland school and facility record last weekend, the women's 4x400 relay team consisting of Ashtyn Gluck, Alaina Diaz, Isabel Abdouch and Kate Zang will be back in action on the track tomorrow night. 
 
Caleb Futter will return to the track to compete in the men's 3000m, after setting a new Grand Valley State record last weekend in the men's mile at Notre Dame. Futter now ranks third in the men's 3000m with a time of 8:00.81 and first in the men's mile with a time of 3:58.65. Alongside Futter in the men's 3000m will be, Conor Somers, Koby Fraaza and Cal Yackin
 
The women's distance crew will be in full force in both the 3000m and 5000m, competing with ranked runners in each event. In the 3000m, Natalie Graber, Klaudia O'Malley, Landyn Howell and Kayce Rypma will be competing for Grand Valley State. O'Malley finds herself in third on the USTFCCCA Top 25 list, with a time of 9:17.61. Rypma and Howell are both ranked in the Additional All-Conditions best with a time of 9:48.55 and 9:51.98. 
 
In the 5000m, Allie Arnsman is ranked in ninth on the Top 25 list with a time of 16:47.35 followed by Sarah May in 12thwith a time of 16:52.95. Abby Vanderkooi and Lauren Kiley will also be partaking in the women's 5000m on Friday night.
