Lakers Claim 93-75 Win Over LSSU on Senior Day

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team defeated Lake Superior State 93-75 on senior day Saturday (Feb. 24) afternoon. GVSU snapped LSSU seven game win streak and improved to 9-7 in the GLIAC, 12-14 overall. 
 
Trevon Gunter led the Lakers with a new career high 29 points on 9-13 shooting and three rebounds. Gunter knocked down five 3-pointers and went a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. William Dunn scored 17 points for the third consecutive game and hauled in six rebounds. Dunn shot 6-10 from the field and 5-9 from three. Mason Docks notched 15 points and drained three 3-pointers. Ethan Alderink added 11 points on an efficient 5-6 shooting.
 
GVSU shot 53% from the field and went 11-12 from the free throw line. The Lakers knocked down a season high 16 3-pointers shooting at a 48% clip from behind the arc. GVSU dished out 16 assists and outscored Lake Superior State 20-7 in fast break points. 
 
Lake Superior State jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the first three minutes of the game. GVSU responded with 19-2 run in seven minutes to take a 22-10 lead halfway through the opening half. GVSU continued to increase the lead to 19 after Dunn drained his third consecutive triple in three straight possessions. 
 
GVSU would take their largest lead of the half with under five minutes to go on a Trevor Smith driving layup to go ahead 43-21. Lake Superior State would cut the GVSU lead to 12 with a 10-0 run in two minutes, but GVSU would answer and take a 15-point lead into halftime.
 
In the second half, LSSU would cut the lead to single digits with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. GVSU would push the lead back to 17 midways through the second half on a Gunter pull up three in transition. Next possession, Mason Docks would drain a three to push the lead back to 20 at 75-55. Gunter would notch his 29th point of the game to give the Lakers their largest lead of the game at 25 with seven minutes to play.
 
Dunn would give GVSU their largest lead of the game at 26 with three minutes to play on his fifth made three of the game. GVSU would cruise the rest of the way to claim the 18-point win.
 
GVSU will close out the regular season next weekend on the road when they travel to face Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech. The Lakers will first take on Northern Michigan in Marquette on Thursday (Feb. 29) at 7:30 PM. GVSU will then travel to Houghton, Michigan for the regular season finale against Michigan Tech on Saturday (Mar. 2) at 2:00 PM. Both games will be streamed live on FloSports.
