Lakers Split Final Day at Lincoln Memorial Invitational

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Grand Valley State softball team split today's doubleheader at the final day of the Lincoln Memorial Invitational. The Lakers defeated Lock Haven 11-1 in five innings before falling to Ohio Dominican 4-2 in game two. GVSU is now 2-2 to start the 2024 season. 
 
Game One vs Lock Haven – W, 11-1
 
The Lakers got off to a fast start by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. GVSU loaded the bases by starting the game drawing three consecutive walks. Next batter, Liberti Fair brought home two runs off a Lock Haven error. Later in the inning, MaryJane Goodman notched a 2-RBI double to left field scoring Morgan Spicer and Faith Edwards. Lock Haven would score one run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Laker lead to 4-1.
 
In the third inning, Natalie Johnson launched a 2-run home run to left field to put the Lakers up 6-1. That home run was Johnson's first collegiate home run. In the fourth inning, the Lakers scored two more runs to increase the lead to 8-1. Fair doubled to center field that scored Eliana Eiland. Next batter, Edwards singles to left field to score Kenedy Coombe.
 
GVSU would score three more runs in the fifth to go up 11-1. Fair drove in her fourth and fifth RBIs of the game off a single to left field to make it 10-1. Later in the inning, Kylie Sinal singled to center field to score Kelsey Komorous
 
The Lakers would shut down Lock Haven in the bottom half of the fifth to earn the 10-run mercy rule win. Genesis Eggart got the start in the circle and improved to 2-0 to start the season after tossing all five innings allowing one run off two hits with four strikeouts. 
 
Liberti Fair led the Lakers going 2-4 at the plate with a double and five RBIs. MaryJane Goodman hit 2-3 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. Hannah Hollister and Faith Edwards each batted 1-2. Hollister scored two runs, while Edwards scored and drove in one run. Natalie Johnson drove in two runs on her first collegiate hoem run.
 
Game Two vs Ohio Dominican – L, 4-2
 
Ohio Dominican got on the board first scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Lakers got on the scoreboard in the third inning scoring off a Panther error. Ohio Dominican responded right back with one run in the bottom half of the third to regain a three-run lead. 
 
The Lakers would add one run in the seventh inning off a leadoff home run by Carsyn Segorski for her first as a Laker. Ohio Dominican would hang on in the seventh for the 4-2 win. 
 
Ashley Platek started in the circle for GVSU and suffered the loss. Kylie Swierkos tossed five innings in relief allowing one run off three hits with four strikeouts. Kelsey Kmorous led the Lakers going 2-3 with a double. MaryJane Goodman, Carsyn Segorski, and Eliana Eiland each recorded a hit. 
 
The Lakers will return to the diamond next weekend at the Lewis Dome Tournament in Rosemont, Illinois. The Lakers will play Minnesota Duluth in the first game on Friday (Feb. 23) at 10:00 AM.
