ROSEMONT, Ill. – The No. 5 Grand Valley State softball team split day one at the Lewis Dome Tournament Friday (Feb. 23) in Rosemont, Illinois. The Lakers shutout Minnesota Duluth 2-0 in the first game and fell 2-1 to Minnesota State Moorhead in game two. The Lakers moved to 3-3 on the season.
Game One vs Minnesota Duluth – W, 2-0
In the game one,
Genesis Eggart tossed a complete game shutout to improve to 3-0 in the circle this season. Eggart struck out a career high 11 batters while only giving up four hits.
The Lakers scored their two runs in the fourth inning to claim the win.
Carsyn Segorski led the inning off with a double, followed by a
Kelsey Komorous RBI double to score Segorski which would turn out to be the game winning RBI. Two batters later,
MaryJane Goodman singled to score Komorous.
Goodman led the Lakers offensively going 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Komorous and Segorski each notched a double, while
Morgan Spicer walked.
Game Two vs Minnesota State Moorhead – L, 2-1
The Lakers would score first in the fifth inning to go up 1-0.
Jasmine Mauk started things with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout to the shortstop. Next batter, Segorski notched an RBI single to score Mauk to put the Lakers up front.
Minnesota State Moorhead would get on the board with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning. The Dragons would keep the Lakers off the board, recording the final three outs in the seventh to claim the one-run win.
Kylie Swierkos got the start in the circle and tossed six innings allowing two unearned runs off four hits with four strikeouts. Segorski notched a hit and RBI, while Komorous and
Megan Koenigshof each recorded a hit.
The Lakers return for day two at the Lewis Dome Tournament tomorrow (Feb. 24) for two games. GVSU will first play Truman State at 10:00 AM ET, before taking on William Jewell in game two at 4:30 PM ET.
