Grand Valley swept this past weekend, squeaking by Wayne State 63-62, then dominating SVSU 78-54. In the win over the Warriors,
Rylie Bisballe tallied her second double-double of the season, recording 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
Nicole Kamin scored 19 points to lead all scorers, shooting 7-13 from the floor. Bisballe then scored a career-high 24 points on 9-11 shooting, in the victory against the Cardinals.
Paige Vanstee had 12 points and Kamin scored 11 in the win. The strong weekend earned Bisballe her third GLIAC Player of the Week honor of the season. The wins helped GVSU climb from four to two in the latest WBCA poll.
The Lakers beat both the Rangers and the Pride in their first matchups of the season in Allendale. GVSU used a 17-4 opening quarter to take the lead on Parkside, then hit 13 second-half threes to put the game away for an 89-57 win. Bisballe had 19 points in the win, Kamin and
Abrie Cabana each had 17, and Vanstee tallied 12 points. In the win over PNW, Grand Valley outscored them 52-20 over the second and third quarters to pull away to a 92-57 victory. Kamin tied a career-high with 20 points, while Bisballe and
Megan Crow had 12 points, and Cabana scored 10. Those two wins started the Lakers current five-game winning streak.
The Rangers enter the weekend on a bit of a skid, losing two straight and four of their past five. However, they play much better at home than on the road, going 7-4 in Kenosha, compared to 4-5 away from home. They have already taken down two top-10 teams at home, beating then #8 Minnesota Duluth in November and #9 Ferris State in early December. They have the third highest scoring offense in the GLIAC, pouring in 73.9 a game, led by Sheridan Flauger's 12.4 and Paty Gallasova's 11.0 a game. The Rangers have fallen to sixth in the GLIAC standings, with a conference record of 7-6, and 12-9 overall.
On Saturday, the Lakers and the Pride will play in the GLIAC's first Play4Kay games to help the Play4Kay foundation. The two teams are helping raise money for the foundation, which can be found at
charity.pledgeit.org.
In the final game of the roadtrip, the Lakers are in Hammond, Indiana to play Purdue Northwest. The Pride have lost three straight and are just 9-14 overall, sitting in seventh in the GLIAC standings at 4-9. PNW has two of the top four scorers in the league, with Dash Shaw in second, scoring 17.1 a game, and Mercedes Simmons fourth at 15.8. Those two combined for 33 in the first game against GVSU. The rest of the roster has struggled offensively, as nobody else is averaging more than seven points a game. Simmons is also second in the conference with 8.7 rebounds a game and she leads the league with 2.4 blocks per game.
