SAGINAW, MICH. – The fourth-ranked GVSU women's basketball team closed out their roadtrip to the east side of the state for the second matchup in the Battle of the Valleys. The Lakers were able to come home happy, completing the season sweep of the Cardinals with a 78-54 win.
The win is the Lakers 20
th of the year, marking the eighth time under
Mike Williams they have reached that mark. They have won 20 games in every full season since he has been at the helm, dating back to 2014-15. They are 20-2 on the year and 11-1 in GLIAC play, still sitting atop the conference standings.
Both teams held brief leads in the early minutes to the game, as it was tied at 10 at the media timeout. Following that break, the Lakers went on a 13-4 run to end the quarter to take a 23-14 lead.
Rylie Bisballe scored the first five points of the second quarter to bring the Laker lead into double-digits. SVSU brought it back down to eight, but GVSU went on an 11-2 run, capped off by two Bisballe three-pointers. The lead grew up to 20 following a
Lexi Plitzuweit jumper, making it 43-23. After trading baskets,
Ava Scanlon hit a layup to end the half and putting Grand Valley up 49-27.
The Lakers started the second half on a quick 6-2 run, forcing a Cardinal timeout less than two minutes in. GVSU was able to bring their lead up to 30 following a Bisballe layup, leading 63-33 late in the third quarter. They would continue to hold a big lead heading into the final quarter, winning 66-38.
GVSU kept their lead above 20 points for the entire fourth quarter, as they finished off their fifth consecutive victory.
Rylie Bisballe scored a career-high 24 points on 9-11 shooting, hitting three triples.
Paige Vanstee scored 11 points and had seven rebounds, while
Nicole Kamin had 10 points.
Abrie Cabana had nine points, six assists, and four rebounds.
