Lakers Defeat Wayne State 65-63 on the Road Saturday

DETROIT – The Grand Valley State men's basketball improved to 4-0 on the road this season after defeating Wayne State 65-63 Saturday (Dec. 7) afternoon in Detroit, Michigan. The Lakers improve to 6-2 on the season and 2-0 in GLIAC play.
 
GVSU shot 41% from the field and 50% (8-16) from three-point range. Wayne State shot 38% from the field and 34% from three. The Warriors outrebounded the Lakers 44-34 and hauled in 14 offensive rebounds to the Lakers five. GVSU dished out 15 assists as a team and swiped a season high 11 steals.
 
Trevon gunter led the Lakers with 14 points off the bench shooting 5-8 from the field and a perfect 4-4 shooting from behind the arc. Kaden Brown scored 12 points on 3-8 shooting from two made three-pointers and three steals. Jalen Charity notched 11 points going 9-11 from the free throw line. William Dunn added nine points and four rebounds. Trevor Smith Jr. swiped a career high four steals.
 
Jalen Charity scored the game's first points over four minutes into the game from the free throw line. Trevor Smith Jr. hit the first field goal of the game with just over 15 minutes to go in the opening half. The first 10 minutes of the first half was back-and-forth as GVSU would take their largest lead of the game at 18-12 with over eight minutes to go off a Kaden Brown three-pointer. 
 
Wayne State would go on a 7-0 run over two minutes to take a 19-18 lead, but GVSU would respond with an 8-0 run to go up seven off a Trevon Gunter made triple. Wayne State would cut the Laker lead to two with just over a minute to play in the first, GVSU would keep the lead at halftime leading 36-33 after the first 20 minutes of play.
 
In the second half, GVSU started with a made jump shot by Mason Docks and a fastbreak layup by Charity to go up 40-33. Wayne State would keep it close and cut the lead to one at 41-40 with 16 minutes remaining in the game. GVSU would answer by increasing the lead to eight with 13 minutes to go off a Gunter three-pointer. 
 
Wayne State would cut the led to one again with seven minutes remaining, but the Lakers would have another answer, going on 7-0 run to push the lead back to eight with under three minutes to play. Wayne State made one last push, cutting the Laker lead to two. The Warriors had a look from three with five seconds to go, but the shot was off, and the Lakers claimed the two-point win.
 
GVSU will be back on the court when they take on Indianapolis on the road on Monday, December 16th. Tipoff is set for 7:30 PM in Indianapolis, Indiana. The game will be streamed on the GLVC sports network and can be listened live on Thunder Country 107.3.
