BIG RAPIDS, MICH. – The GVSU women's volleyball team saw their season come to an end this evening in the Midwest Region semifinals, falling in five sets the Findlay. The Lakers end their season at 28-4, the most wins in a season since 2013.
The Lakers took set one 25-18, then dropped the next two 23-25 and 21-25. They forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win in the fourth, but ultimately fell 17-19 in set five. The Lakers and Oilers traded points for much of the opening set until GVSU took an 18-16 lead. From there, GVSU went 7-2 run to close the set and take the game. Findlay got up to a 20-14 lead in the second set, but the Lakers battled back to take a 22-21 lead. The Oilers responded with a 4-1 run to close the set and tie up the match.
Set three saw the two teams trading points until a late run from Findlay gave them the set victory. The Lakers responded to take the fourth set and force a fifth set. In the final set, GVSU led 8-6 when the two teams switched sides. Findlay tied the game and the two teams went to extra points. The Oilers were able take the final points and win the match.
Paige Sanders had another big game, totaling 17 kills on a .471 hitting percentage, while
Kendall Stover added 16 kills and 14 digs.
Brianna Stawski and
Kate Goudreau each had 13 kills, with
Meghan O'Sullivan adding 12.
Jordyn Gates dished out a new career-high 62 assists and
Julia Blaney had 26 digs.
This brings an end to the careers of
Jordyn Gates,
Julia Blaney,
Elena Vaara, and
Kaitlyn Bingham. The four of them have helped lead the Lakers to a GLIAC regular season crown, three trips to the NCAA Tournament, and 91 victories over the past four seasons.
