ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's basketball team plays one final game this weekend to close out 2024. The Lakers square off against Northwood at 3:00 in Midland before the holiday break.

The Lakers are 11-1 this season, suffering their first loss on Tuesday at the hands of Ohio State. GVSU fell 82-57 to the Buckeyes to finish off a 2-1 roadtrip. They previously defeated Quincy (73-58) and Drury (104-63) earlier on the trip. This is the fourth straight season that the Lakers have started 11-1 or better, beginning 27-1, 17-1, and 15-1 over the last three seasons. The top-ranked Lakers have the nation's eighth best scoring defense, allowing 51.7 points a game, and they also boast the nation's ninth best offense, scoring 80.9 a contest.
In last season's matchup at Northwood, the Lakers survived with a 75-71 victory. GVSU led by as much as nine points in the fourth quarter, but the Timberwolves battled back to take a lead with 2:30 to play. GVSU responded with a 7-2 run to close out the game and pick up the win. Five Lakers scored in double-figures, led by
Paige Vanstee's 14.
Abrie Cabana and
Ellie Droste both had 13 points, while
Nicole Kamin had 12, and
Rylie Bisballe had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Northwood has started the season 3-7, but two of the wins have come over top-25 opponents, both in Midland. They defeated then number 10 Ashland by 11, and on Friday they beat #22 Northern Michigan by 18. Northwood has three players tallying double-figure points, with Lea Holmes scoring 15.4, Maeve St. John averaging 15.3, and Maddie Voelker adding 13.6 a game. The Timberwolves play much better at home, entering Sunday 3-1 in Midland, compared to 0-6 on the road.
