Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

#1 Lakers Take Down Quincy in Road Battle

QUINCY, ILL. – The top-ranked GVSU women's basketball team survived a tough road test at Quincy, outlasting the Hawks 73-58. The win moves the Lakers to 10-0, the second time in three years they have started this well.

Quincy got out to a 4-2 start midway through the opening quarter, but GVSU responded with an 8-0 run, capped off by a Molly Anderson triple, to take a 10-4 lead. The Hawks hit a three of their own, but still trailed 10-7 after 10 minutes.

The Lakers got back-to-back buckets from Paige VanStee and Megan Crow to double up the Hawks 14-7. However, Quincy would answer back, getting within one point at 14-13. The game stayed close the rest of the quarter, then with time running down in the half, Rylie Bisballe hit a turnaround jumper as time expired to put the Lakers up 28-24 at the break.

After a Quincy jumper to open the second half, GVSU got threes from Kathryn Schmidt, Abrie Cabana, and Ellie Droste as part of an 11-0 run to increase the lead up to 39-26. The Hawks got back on the board with two free throws, but Lexi Plitzuweit answered with another Laker triple to put them up by 14. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter, with GVSU leading 52-40 heading into the fourth quarter.

A quick 6-0 run from the Lakers gave them their largest lead of the night, up 18 points, 58-40. Quincy responded with a 15-4 run to bring it within six with just over three minutes to play, trailing 62-56. Bisballe made a big play again, hitting a layup through contact, then adding the free throw to stave off the Hawk run. That started an 11-2 Laker run to end the game, icing the game with seven free throws to close out win number 10.

Rylie Bisballe had a big offensive performance, pouring in 21 points, adding five rebounds. Nicole Kamin scored 12 points, with Paige VanStee recording eight points and five boards. The team forced 31 turnovers, scoring 30 points off those turnovers.
