The 17
th-ranked Grand Valley State men's wrestling team will open the 2024-25 campaign Saturday (Nov. 9) at the Michigan State Open. Wrestling will begin at 9 a.m. in Jenison Fieldhouse. The Lakers are coming off a 13
th-place finish at the 2024 NCAA DII National Championships in their first season back as a varsity sport after a 32-year hiatus.
"We are excited the get back on the mat competing against someone other than our own team in our room," said head coach
Joey Simcoe, the 2023-24 Division II Coach of the Year. "We have a young team, but I feel like we gained a lot of experience last year with a young lineup and our redshirts that were able to get in a lot of mat time in open tournaments," added Simcoe.
Grand Valley State returns two Division II All-Americans, including the National Champion at 174, junior
Josh Kenny. Kenny, who dominated at the NCAA Championships with three bonus point wins and a fall in the championship match, finished with a 32-5 record. Fellow junior,
Wyatt Miller, earned All-America honors at 197 and finished with a 31-8 record.
In addition, the Lakers return several contributors from the 2023-24 squad.
Collin Twigg (133) tallied a 21-12 mark as a true freshman, while
Jak Keller was 16-18 at 141 his freshman campaign.
"We want to build on the foundation that we started a year ago and we have several wrestlers competing for spots in the lineup. I like the chemistry that we have among our young men and think we will surprise a lot of people," added Simcoe.
