ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team open up the 2024-25 season with a dominate 105-68 win over Walsh Friday (Nov. 8) afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers start the season 1-0, while the Cavaliers fall to 0-1.
GVSU shot an impressive 65% from the field and 13-25 (52%) from three. The Lakers dished out 22 assists as a team and only committed seven turnovers. GVSU outrebounded Walsh 37-21 including 9-6 in offensive rebounds. The Lakers also outscored Walsh 42-24 in the paint.
Kaden Brown led the Lakers with a career high 18 points in his GVSU debut shooting 7-11 from the field and 4-8 from three.
Charles Turner scored a career high 14 points shooting 5-6 from the field and 3-4 from downtown.
William Dunn notched 13 points on 5-7 shooting, while also leading GVSU with six rebounds.
Marcus Gray II scored 12 points in his first collegiate game shooting 5-6 from the field and 2-3 from three.
Mason Docks dished out a career high 10 assists in the win.
With the game tied at 19-19 with just over nine minutes to play in the first half, the Lakers would close the half on a 31-8 run to go up 50-27. GVSU would get their first double digit lead of the game off a
William Dunn three with seven minutes to play.
Charles Turner would hit back-to-back three pointers with three minutes to play in the half to give the Lakers a 43-23 lead. Dunn would hit another thre just at the end of the half to give the Lakers a 23-point advantage.
In the second half, the Lakers would only score two points in the first four and a half minutes, but
Marcus Gray II created a spark with four quick points off the bench which put the Lakers back up 17 points. With just under 14 minutes to play, Gray II knocked down a pair of triples in back-to-back possessions follow by a
Javion Otten and-one layup to give GVSU their largest lead of the game at 66-41.
GVSU would continue to dominate as
Charles Turner and
Ethan Alderink would knock down a three with 11 minutes to play to put GVSU up 74-47.
Kaden Brown scored five straight points to put the Lakers up 30 points midway through the second half. All 13 Lakers that dressed saw playing time and all 13 players scored in the win.
GVSU will close out the opening weekend at home when they host Ashland on Sunday (Nov. 10). Tipoff is set for 1:00 PM at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
