Lakers Fall to Ashland at the Buzzer Sunday

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team fell 68-66 at the buzzer Sunday (Nov. 10) afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers fall to 1-1 on the season, while Ashland moves to 1-0.
 
Ethan Alderink led GVSU in scoring with 18 points on 6-12 shooting and 5-6 shootign from the free throw line. Alderink also led the team with seven rebounds. Mason Docks scored 15 points on 5-8 shooting and 5-6 shooting from the free throw line. Jalen Charity notched 14 points on 5-8 shooting with four rebounds.Trevor Smith Jr. added eight. Points while Cam Regnerus hauled in seven rebounds.
 
GVSU shot 38% from the field and 79% from the free throw line. Ashland shot 40% from the field and 31% from three. GVSU outrebounded Ashland 39-31 including 10-6 in offensive rebounds.
 
The Lakers trailed by as many as eight points in the first half but brought the deficit own to two off an offensive rebound and dunk by Cam Regnerus with 3:47 left. GVSU would take a one-point lead off an Ethan Alderink made layup with 1:10 left. Ashland would make one of two free throws to send the game tied at halftime.
 
In the second half, the two teams traded multiple baskets in the first six minutes. GVSU would take a five-point led with 12:18 to play off back-to-back buckets by Jalen Charity. Ashland would respond with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 52-52 with 9:24 left in the game. 
 
The Eagles would go up five with 6:25 remaining, but the Lakers would bring the lead down to one at 59-58 on an Alderink driving layup for 5:00 minutes left. Mason Docks would tie the game at 64-64 with a driving layup with 1:09 to play. Both teams would knock down a pair of free throws with under a minute to play with Docks hitting a pair of free throws with four seconds. Ashland called timeout with 1.7 seconds left and made a shot in the paint with no time left to claim the 68-66 win.
 
GVSU will be back in action next week Tuesday (Nov. 19) when they travel to face Lewis for their first road game of the regular season. Tipoff is set for 8:30 pm et in Romeoville, Illinois.
