ALLENDALE, MICH. – The 11
th-ranked GVSU women's volleyball team began postseason play this evening, welcoming in Crosstown foe Davenport for a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal matchup. The Lakers dispatched the Panthers in straight sets to move on to Saturday's semifinals.
The Lakers took the match, winning the sets 25-20, 25-22, and 25-20. In the opening set, GVSU jumped out to and 8-3 lead, then extended it up to 15-9 midway through the set. Davenport was able to climb back and tie the set at 16 with a 7-1 run. They eventually took a 19-18 lead, but the Lakers went on their own 7-1 run to close out a first set victory.
The Lakers dominated the second set, going up 12-3 then cruising from there, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. Set three was tied at 10 and stayed tied until it was 13 all. The Lakers were able to go on a 3-0 run to go up 16-13, DU was able to battle back and tie the set back up again, this time at 18. GVSU responded from there, ending the match on a 7-2 run, getting an ace from
Jordyn Gates to close out the match.
Five Lakers had five or more kills, led by nine from
Paige Sanders on a .533 hitting percentage.
Meghan O'Sullivan had eight kills, 19 assists, and 10 digs, with
Brianna Stawski had seven kills and 3.5 blocks.
Julia Blaney had a team-high 13 digs and the Laker frontline totaled 12 total blocks in the game.
The Lakers will play the three seed Northern Michigan on Saturday in the semifinals, hosted by Ferris State.
