BILLINGS, MONT. – The third-ranked GVSU women's basketball team faced an early season test, taking on sixth-ranked Montana State Billings on the road. The Lakers passed the test, coming away with a 69-52 victory over the Yellowjackets.
For the second straight game, the Lakers never trailed. They got layups from
Abrie Cabana and
Nicole Kamin to start out up 4-0. After Billings got within one at 6-5,
Avery Zeinstra buried a triple to lengthen the Laker advantage. The Yellowjackets got within three late in the quarter, but
Ellie Droste hit another GVSU three-pointer to make it 19-13 heading into the second.
MSUB battled back in the second quarter, cutting it to a two-point game with just over three minutes to play. However, the Lakers again had an answer, going on an 8-0 run, getting five points from
Abrie Cabana and a three from
Hadley Miller to go up 33-23. Billings struggled to get any closer the rest of the half, trailing 35-26 at the break.
Only two minutes into the second half, the Lakers got their lead back into double-digits, as Cabana drilled one from deep. They lead would never dip back below 10 the rest of the game, with the Lakers getting another three from Zeinstra and 10 points in the paint the rest of the third quarter, leading 54-41 after 30 minutes of action.
The Lakers continued to score down low in the fourth quarter, getting eight points in the paint. They would hit seven free throws in the final frame as well to ice the game away.
Rylie Bisballe and
Abrie Cabana each scored 10 points to another balanced Laker offensive attack.
Nicole Kamin and
Hadley Miller had nine points, with
Ellie Droste adding eight. Kamin pulled down a team-high six boards, while Bisballe and
Paige Vanstee each had five. Bisballe and
Avery Zeinstra led the team with four assists apiece.
GVSU outrebounded the Yellowjackets 43-31 and held them to just 1-15 from beyond the arc in the game.
The Lakers close out their time in Montana Sunday morning taking on #8 Union at 11:00 am EST.
