Lakers Pull Off Reverse Sweep of Wayne State

ALLENDALE, MICH. – It was like déjà vu tonight for the GVSU women's volleyball team, facing Wayne State tonight. After reverse sweeping the Warriors in Detroit back in October, the Lakers once again dropped the first two sets tonight, before rebounding to win the next three and earn another dramatic comeback victory. The Lakers are now 24-2 overall and are second in the GLIAC at 13-2.

The Warriors won the first two sets 15-25 and 22-15, but then GVSU flipped the script, winning the next three by the scores 25-16, 25-19, and 15-13. In the first set, GVSU held a 10-9 lead, but Wayne State got hot, going on a 10-1 run to take a 20-11 lead. They closed it out from there to take the opening set. Set two also saw the Lakers up 10-9, and again WSU went on a run to take control, this time it was a 9-4 scoring run. The Lakers came back to tie the set at 20, but Wayne State recorded five of the final seven points to go up 2-0 in the match.

GVSU got out strong in the third set, opening up a 13-6 lead. The advantage kept growing, go up to 18-8. The Lakers never led the Warriors in the set, winning their first game of the match. Much like set three, GVSU got out to an early lead, up 13-8. Wayne State battled back to within one at 15-14. From there, the Lakers closed on a 10-5 run to force a deciding fifth set.

In the final set, the Lakers went up 3-1, but Wayne State came back to go up 6-3 and force a GVSU timeout. Following the timeout, Grand Valley State scored three straight to tie it at six. Wayne State scored two of the next three, to lead 8-7 as the two teams flipped sides. GVSU tallied five straight points to go up 12-8, but once again the Warriors came back, making it 14-13 GVSU. However, the Lakers would complete the comeback, with Kendall Stover recording the kill to give GVSU the victory.

Kendall Stover had a monster game, totaling 18 kills on a .349 hitting percentage, adding 12 digs and three service aces. Meghan O'Sullivan tallied a triple-double, notching 10 kills, 35 assists, and 10 digs. Brianna Stawski and Paige Sanders each had 11 kills, with Stawski doing it on a .579 swing percentage, and Sanders had four total blocks. Kennedy Arp recorded 10 kills as well. Caroline Baker dished out 27 assists, while Julia Blaney had a team-high 22 digs.

The Lakers close out the regular season on Saturday, traveling to Roosevelt to play at 5:00.
