BILLINGS, MONT. – The GVSU women's basketball team began their season this morning at the D2CCA Tip Off at the Trailhead tournament out in Montana. The Lakers started 1-0 for the 13
th straight year, dominating Findlay to win 92-50.
The Lakers wasted no time taking control of the game, scoring 13 seconds into the game off a
Nicole Kamin jumper. That was the start of an 8-0 run to begin the game. Findlay cut it to 11-5, but the Lakers responded with a 11-4 run to end the quarter, kickstarted by an
Abrie Cabana triple, as they led 22-9 after 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, the lead only continued to grow. Kamin,
Lexi Plitzuweit, and
Avery Zeinstra all buried threes for a 9-0 run to put GVSU up 34-12. The Oilers got it their deficit under 20 points late in the quarter, but a 10-2 Laker run to end the half put them up 50-23.
The lead grew up above 30, after a 10-0 run, highlighted by threes from Cabana and
Hadley Miller.
MacKenzie Bisballe hit a late triple to kick off a 12-3 run, ending the third quarter leading 77-34.
Grand Valley kept their lead above 40 for the rest of the game, eclipsing 90 points, something they only did four times last sason.
Abrie Cabana,
Rylie Bisballe, and
Hadley Miller all totaled 12 points to pace the team. Cabana and Miller both added six rebounds and three assists, while Bisballe had five assists, four rebounds, and three steals.
MacKenzie Bisballe scored 11 points in her collegiate debut, while
Nicole Kamin and
Ellie Droste each had 10 points.
Lexi Plitzuweit and
Avery Zeinstra both dished out four assists. The Lakers forced 25 Oiler turnovers, scoring 22 points off those turnovers.
GVSU is back in action tomorrow afternoon, taking on host Montana State Billings at 3:00 EST.
