Lakers Sweep Northern Michigan to Set New Program Record

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's volleyball team was back home Friday evening, and they continued their winning ways. The Lakers swept Northern Michigan to win their 11th straight match and move to 19-1 on the season, setting a new program record for a start to a campaign.
 
GVSU took the match by the scores of 25-13, 28-26, 25-16. The Lakers got out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set and never looked back. The Wildcats were never able to get closer than four points the rest of the way, as GVSU cruised to a set one win.
 
Set two was back and forth to start, but NMU was able to open a 15-12 lead midway through the set. They were able to maintain that lead and get to set point at 24-21. GVSU was able to come back and tie the match at 24. Then after Northern took a 25-24 lead, the Lakers scored four of the final five points to complete the comeback and take the set.
 
The Laker defense made a statement in set three, opening with three consecutive blocks. That helped GVSU start out up 13-5. The lead got stretched up to 11 before NMU cut it back down to seven at 23-16. But GVSU closed the match out with the final two points to finish off the sweep.
 
Jordyn Gates tallied her ninth triple-double of the season, notching 14 kills, 19 assists, and 10 digs on a .700 hitting percentage. Kendall Stover had 12 kills and nine digs, while Kate Goudreau added eight kills. Meghan O'Sullivan recorded 29 assists, nine digs, and 3.5 blocks. As a team, the Lakers swung at a .448 clip and held NMU to .091.
 
The Lakers stay at home tomorrow afternoon, taking on Michigan Tech at 2:00.
