Gameday Information

• #1 Grand Valley State will host #3 Ferris State in the 2024 Anchor-Bone Classic. The Anchor-Bone Classic began in 2002, but the first game was a 40-10 Laker win in 2003. GVSU leads the all-time Anchor-Bone Classic series by a 12-8 margin. The Lakers (7-0) are coming off a 16-9 victory over #23 Saginaw Valley State, while the Bulldogs (6-1) are coming off a 51-13 victory over Michigan Tech.  
 
THE SERIES
Grand Valley State leads the all-time series with Ferris State by a 32-23-1 margin. The Lakers are 16-12 at Lubbers Stadium versus the Bulldogs and 16-11-1 at Top Taggart Field. GVSU and FSU have met twice in a season five times since 2015, including each of the last three years. Saturday's game will be the seventh meeting since 2021.  

Saturday's meeting will mark the 14th consecutive meeting that both teams are ranked, including seven straight when both teams are ranked in the top six. Grand Valley State holds a 14-10 advantage when either team or both are ranked since 2001. GVSU has been ranked number one at the time of the meeting between the two programs seven times and the Lakers are 6-1 in those games. Ferris State has been ranked number one four times at the time of the meeting (2023, 2022, 2021, 1996) and the Lakers  hold a 3-1 advantage. GVSU holds an 9-2 advantage over the Bulldogs when either team is ranked number one. Since 2001 GVSU holds a 15-11 advantage in the series

• The Lakers have won 19 consecutive GLIAC games. The two-time defending GLIAC champions' last GLIAC loss was 10-16-21. In addition, the Lakers have won 16 consecutive regular season games. 

• Last Week - Grand Valley State trailed 9-3 at the half, but scored 13 second half points to claim a 16-9 victory at #23 Saginaw Valley State. PK Mathew Bacik converted a 33-yard field goal in the first quarter. The Laker defense forced a punt and GVSU drove 50 yards in 11 plays for a TD. Derrick Woods finished the drive with a 1-yard run. The Lakers took over possession of the ball late in the third quarter and drove 90 yards in nine plays for a TD. QB Avery Moore tossed a 22-yard TD pass to TE Gavin Cossou to give the Lakers a 16-9 lead. Moore connected on 13-of-22 passes for 184 yards and a TD, while Kyle Nott led the receiving unit with three catches for 67 yards. Kellen Reed caught three passes for 46 yards. LB Anthony Cardamone led the defense with 11 tackles, 2.0 TFL and a QB sack, while FS Ian Kennelly chipped in eight tackles.

• GVSU is 37-19 versus ranked teams since 2009 and 228-38 versus all teams as a ranked team since 2001.

Team Game Notes....

• The GVSU defense did not allow Northern Michigan to complete one pass last Saturday (Oct. 12). It marked the first time in Laker football history that an opponent did not complete a pass. 

• GVSU rushed for five touchdowns versus Northern Michigan.

• The GVSU defense recorded eight QB sacks (-43) and 15 tackles for loss (-55) vs. West Florida. The eight QB sacks ranks third in a single game. 

• The 58 points scored tied the program record for points scored in a season-opening game (58-16 at St. Joseph's College in 1990) and the 58-point margin broke the previous record of 56 (56-0 vs. Minnesota Crookston in 2001) for margin of victory in a season-opening game.

• Grand Valley State shutout Central State in the season-opening game (58-0), marking the first time in Laker football history that GVSU has shutout opponents in back-to-back games regular season games at Lubbers Stadium (Davenport 30-0, 2023). 
 
• GVSU rushed for 546 yards in the season-opening game, three yards shy of the single-game, school record (549/1974 Findlay).

• The Lakers rushed for seven touchdowns vs. Central State, the most since rushing for seven vs. Notre Dame College in 2012.  

• Three running backs eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in the same game (Central State) for the first time in school history. The previous record was two that reached the 100-yard rushing mark in 2014 (Chris Robinson 126/Terrel Dorsey 109) vs. Tiffin.

• GVSU tallied 667 yards of total offense (546 rushing-121 passing) vs. Central State, the eighth-best, single-game total all-time. The Lakers notched 668 yards of total offense in 2023 vs. Kentucky State.  

• The Laker defense limited Central State to 60 rushing yards, 35 passing yards, 95 total yards and six first downs. 

• GVSU recorded 12 TFL and two QB sacks vs. Central State. 

• GVSU tallied 15.0 TFL and 8.0 QB sacks vs. West Florida. The 8.0 QB sacks ranks third all-time. 

Individual Game Notes...
• Junior LB Anthony Cardamone was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week following his 11 tackle, 2.0 TFL and 1.0 QB sack outing at Saginaw Valley State. 

• Freshman punter Evan Sundermann was named the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance at SVSU. Sundermann averaged 45.6 ypg, dropped two at the Cardinal 1 yard line, two more inside the 20 with a long of 58 yards. 

 • Sophomore WR Kellen Reed was named the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week after returning the opening kickoff 92 for a TD vs. Northern Michigan. Reed added another KO return for a TD that was called back due to a penalty and he was credidted with 32 yards. 

• Sophomore running back Khalil Eichelberger was named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 129 yards and two TDs on 15 carries vs. #20 West Florida.

• Junior punter Trace Hrgich was named the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance at CSU-Pueblo. Hrgich averaged 46.5 yards on eight punts, dropping four inside the 20 yard line and two inside the 10 yard line. Hrgich ranks eighth in the country.

• RS Freshman PK Mathew Bacik converted a career-long and the second-longest field goal in Laker football history, 53-yard field goal vs. West Florida. 

• Sophomore running back Khalil Eichelberger rushed for 119 yards and two TDs on 18 carries vs. Central State (9/5).

• RS freshman running back Kenneth Jones tallied a career-high 116 rushing yards and one TD on 11 carries vs. Central State (9/5).

• Sophomore running back Derrick Woods rushed for a career-high 109 yards and two TDs on four carries vs. Central State (9/5). 

• RS freshman Paschal Jolman toted the ball four times for a career-high 84 yards and a TD vs. Central State (9/5). 

• Place kicker Mathew Bacik set a freshman record with his 46 yard field goal, a freshman record. Bacik was 7-for-8 in PATs vs. Central State (9/5).
