KENOSHA, WIS. – The 15
th ranked GVSU women's volleyball team stayed hot Friday night, picking up a four-set victory over Parkside. It was the Lakers sixth straight victory, improving them to 14-1 on the year and 6-1 in league play.
After dropping the opening set 21-25, GVSU responded to win the next three sets 25-14, 25-22, and 25-10. The Lakers began the opening set leading 12-9. Parkside responded and tied the set at 14. It stayed close for the next 14 points, as both teams were tied at 21. From there, the Rangers scored the next four points to take the first set. In the second set, GVSU got out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back. The Rangers were never able to get closer than three points for the rest of the set, as GVSU cruised to the set two win.
The third set was tied at 10 until the Lakers scored four straight points to go up 14-10. Parkside responded to take a 17-16 lead. The Lakers tallied four straight points to retake the lead, but the Rangers would not go away, bringing it to 22-21 late in the set. GVSU was able to hold them off, scoring three of the final four points to take a 2-1 set lead. In the fourth set, it was all Lakers. They raced out to a 12-3 advantage and kept their foot on the gas pedal to dominate the final set and pick up the win.
Brianna Stawski had a big game, leading the team with 11 kills on a .370 hitting percentage, while adding 4.5 total blocks.
Jordyn Gates had 10 kills, 24 assists, and five digs, with
Kate Goudreau adding 10 kills.
Paige Sanders totaled nine kills and 4.5 blocks.
Meghan O'Sullivan recorded 17 assists and 10 digs, while
Julia Blaney had 15 digs. As a team, the Lakers tallied 15 blocks and held the Rangers to a .068 hitting percentage.
GVSU is back in action tomorrow afternoon at Purdue Northwest. The opening serve is set for 3:00.
