Sawyers Defeat Parkside 76-54 Saturday Afternoon

Game Highlights

ALLENDALE 
– The Grand Valley State men's basketball team took down Parkside 76-54 Saturday (Jan. 27) afternoon. The Sawyers improved to 8-11 on the season and 5-4 in the GLIAC.
 
William Dunn led the Sawyers with 18 points and seven rebounds. Dunn shot 6-10 from the field and 2-4 from three. Marius Grazulis notched 15 points and hauled in six rebounds including three offensive boards. Trevon Gunter added 13 points on 4-6 shooting and 2-4 from behind the arc. 
 
GVSU shot 54% from the field and 42.9% from three. The Sawyers dominated the paint scoring 46 points, while holding the Rangers to just 16 points in the paint. GVSU outrebounded Parkside 38-27. 
 
The Sawyers started out the game on a 9-2 run. Grazulis hit two layups, while Dunn drained a three in that span. Jalen Charity gave GVSU their seven-point lead back off a driving layup with just over seven minutes to go in the first half. With one minute to go in the first half, Mason Docks made a driving layup to give the Sawyers an eight-point lead into the locker room.
 
In the second half, both teams traded three's during the first two minutes of play. With under 15 minutes to play, Trevor Smith scored seven straight points for GVSU to give them their largest lead of the game at 43-31. After back-to-back made triples by the Rangers to cut the lead to six, Smith hit a driving layup to up the lead back up to eight.
 
Halfway through the second half, Parkside cut the lead to three on a made three, but the Sawyers answered with buckets by Grazulis to get the lead up to seven. Parkside would hit another three to make it a two-point game with nine minutes remaining. Ethan Alderink would hit two straight shots to up the lead back to six and Docks would drain a three to put the Sawyers ahead 60-53 with six minutes left.
 
With just under five minutes to go, Britain Harris made a driving layup to give the Sawyers a double-digit lead again. GVSU would end the game on a 14-0 scoring run to seal the 22-point win.
 
GVSU will now hit the road for five straight games beginning next Saturday (Feb. 3) when they travel to face crosstown rival Davenport at 3:00 PM. The game will be streamed live on FloSports.
